I just did an Umix Song program with the new SL version for the first time. I used the Balanced setting. I’m Win11 on an i7 PC, 8G ram on the video card and 64G of PC ram. I hate to say this but I think this latest version is not as good as the previous version.. Looking at my Task Manager, SL is only using .6% of my video card ram - and I have set the video card as the main processor. This is WAY DIFFERENT than 12.0.30’s behavior. The CPU usage is spiking up and down between 8% and 44%, PC memory usage at 27% of my 64G. It took 8:30 mins to complete a 2:60 min Albert Collins jump blues tune, ‘Back Stroke’.
I’ll try a few more sessions but I’m thinking that back to 12.0.30 is where I’m headed. I’m sure Robin is working hard here - and I’m sure it’s not an easy job.
Not what you want to hear, but just FWIW, on my (recently built) system, while performance was not a problem before this, 12.0.40 has also not changed that. I use a 4m live recording for tests, it separates drums, bass, vocals, guitars and piano in 1m7s.
AMD 9700X, 64GB RAM, 5060 Ti 16GB, Win 11.
Haha! I understand, MrSoundman. As with all things, soon, even that will be dated.
I’m not limping exactly, but SL is still not using my GPU - even when I tell it to. So in my case, 12.0.30 used 7.5G of my 8G GPU ram and this is what I’m concerned about. Is this what Robin intended? Or is something not right?
I am going to guess it has something to do with 12.0.40 not using “shared memory” for the GPU. In that post, the OP only has 2GB VRAM, and you have 8GB, while we have found the unmixing process likes more (and works for me with 16GB).
In “Edit | Preferences | System”, the option “Use Shared Memory” seems to be unchecked by default in 12.0.40
Can you try checking that box, and restarting SpectraLayers?
That sounded like a good idea, but very little difference. 10 mins total. FWIW, the GPU is used even less, and the PC ram usage is up from 27% to 40%, CPU jumps from 8% to 47% now.
Thanks Robert! It is rather odd that to me - as ongoing as the changes are to SL - that Robin/Steinberg doesn’t create the option to download a previous version. This said I am very trusting that as obvious as this problem is with version 12.0.40 that the next version will sort things. Well, unless everybody has a brand new super PC like MrSoundman…
Oh another Q: Do I have to remove the 12.0.40 version before trying to install a previous version? Seems likely that the two can’t coexist like Cubase?
Completely uninstalled 12.0.40 and now back to 12.0.30. Here’s my Task Master pic (taken while I was Unmixing a 2:60 song with 6 instruments…) BTW, this took 4.5 minutes.
