16bit/44kz wave vs 256kbps/44kz mp3

We all know what the problem is here, I think my North American quote was a bit “OTT” apologies have been given…I actully quite like NZ people…I also like Canadians…In fact Im an extremely well balanced kind & gentle racist !

Btw you lot, Im Scottish, I just like the weather here in Poland.

The problem here is you lot not me…I try , as much as I can to tolerate you all, but at times its hard, I feel the world shifting towards YANK MAC USERS! ruling the important positions, and the rest of us being left behind.

Incidentally my North American “scathing attack” came after a polite email from Steinberg Hq thru my inbox, & I quote…

“End of last week, you received an email from us relating to a special promotion for the CI series of USB Audio Interfaces. Unfortunately this information was sent to you in error as this promotion is only applicable to customers within the US.”

This was after I had contacted my distributor to order 4 sets of aforesaid C12+ for my training school here in sunny Poland, as it was a great deal, and Steinberg were also throwing in a free set of Yamaha Headphones (perfect for student use, as Im adding a few more workstations, I have marketed hard here in Poland to change the alluding image of …“Electronic Music can ONLY be made using Logic or Ableton” …mirage).

To add insult to injury, I also learned a few days before of my “plague like qualities” as in I am also not able to purchase a downloadable version (requiring NO DONGLE, again perfect for student use) of Cubase 6 Elements!..all in all,and adding the costs up, I am screwed to the tune of 1800$…just because I live in EUROPE!..BOLLOCKS!..Ive been a Steinberg users for 18yrs, spent a feckin fortune over the years, and Steinberg / Steinberg North America deem me not to qualify as a “Valued Customer”…again BOLLOCKS…as this “RACISM” has been happening for years with Steinberg. and there stupid irritating descision to seperate the (poor people) from the Rich!.. Now before any of you chuck back a rant…Ask yourself how you would feel being “OSTRACISED” continually, with being omitted constantly from great Steinberg deals, to which you cannot take part in!. :open_mouth:

Poland is deemed to NOT even exist within Steinbergs Direct Distribution in Europe!. I receive NO phone support, I deem not to qualify for any EMAIL support, and I cant even get a feckin DOWNLOAD! … A country larger than than most, with 38.5 million of a population, borders Germany, but as I said, Poland is not even officially deemed worthy to have direct distribution to its next door neighbour. I had enough of feeling like a second class citizen growing up in Scotland, and being made feel a leper by England (Our bank notes werent even accepted in England!) but now the racism still exists as there is a condemning quality by Germans towards “second class citizens” like the Poles. The people from below are only counted as normal people in Steinbergs eyes.

BeNeLux
Canada
France
Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Italy
Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland)
Spain
United Kingdom and Ireland
USA

BOLLOCKS!
The olive branch awaits!.

If it makes you feel any better, I got the exact same email too, so Canada is different than Steinberg North America :unamused:

That would definately send me over the edge Paul!…I think there is strength in numbers, and maybe a little campaign would waken up Steinberg to the fact that although the affluent AMERICAN market is obviously more lucrative…Europe (& the rest of the English speaking World outside the US ,come to that)… is leading the way and has done for years concerning Electronica…“Our influence” in club music makes young Americans spotty teenagers BUY their bloody stuff in the first place!..

Aloha (Hawaii here)

??
{‘-’}

phrasology!

my my, its amazing that after my first rant in many years here!..which may i add was instigated others, I see many members that take the time to invoke quips, comments, and accusations and "waste"their time by doing so…but absolve themselves from writing helpful posts to where their time would be much more valued.

Once again I sadly take time to defend a comment, rather than see any “brotherly love”…Hawaii…is that part of America?

FFS now can we move on…although Im sure this post may be deemed my downfall, so I shall (like I did for the previous 6 months) …depart from being active, and lets the more senior, qualified, and helpful elderly brotherhood tell others to RTFM.

I’ll stick with 16bit/44Khz wave… old school

Relatively speaking… of course

All my relatives are now offically “Deid”

The Beatles and Jimi sounded great in mono because their music was great. I wonder how the quality of their recordings would be relevant in this discussion? Come on - get out of your anal orifices and MAKE SOME MUSIC. :smiling_imp:

you mean I should make some music with my anal-og orifice?

Hadnt been here in a while- had some big jobs I finished up and had forgotten I posted this- thank you!- to all who posted data and their opinions on this- very insightful!

Well, as yet another Scot (58 last birthday) I figure my ears are past detecting the finer nuances of the highest sampling rates / bitrates. I grew up grooving to 45rpm singles on a crappy record player whose stylus I was never renewed because, frankly, we never knew you could. However, these days my listening is all classical / acoustic and quality of hi-fi for reproduction matters to me. So I got a foot in both camps. For my own stuff, I realized years ago that my writing and playing and mics and recording space were the critical path, not sampling rates. So I set the DAW at 24bit / 44.1kHz. I post mp3s online at 256kbps.

does anyone know who to import mp3’s into iTunes? For example, I bought Dave’s last album and extracted it into my iTunes folder… but I can’t find it inside the GUI. I know I’ve done this before, just can’t recall how

You don’t copy them into the iTuns database manually… Do this:

File > Add to Library

Select files

Click OK

iTunes will then copy the files into the structure, create entries and if there is valid metadata in the MP3s it will populate the track names, artist etc.

If you are importing a CD and if the tracks have valid ISRCs and if those ISRCs are associated with the tracks in CDDBm then iTunes gets the metadata that way. It doesn’t read CD TEXT.

What happens when you convert an mp3 to a standard 16/44 wave file?- do you lose any quality- or should it sound exactly the same?- Im assuming this would not add any quality- although many claim that the Nuendo audio engine has an affect on any sound it processes- so it may change a SoundForge mp3 a little if converted do wave in cubase SX or later?

You can never ‘add’ quality, no matter what way you convert a file.

MP3s smear your fast transients! The lower the bitrate, the more the destruction. To compare, find a good quality WAV recording of some drums and pay close attention to the attack of, say, the hihats. Hihats in WAV are well defined… kinda like “tic-tic-tic” but in 256K MP3 are more like “thip-thip-thip”. Stop me if I’m getting too technical.

(PS If the drums WAV was originally an MP3 then the test is pointless)

Up until a few minutes ago, whenever SoundForge would ask me if I wanted to export an mp3 as “joint stereo” I would just think “joint stereo? wtf?, better check my SoundForge Power! book, oh wait thats right, the book does not cover joint stereo” (sorry Scott  its still a great book!)but that was until I read this article: What is Joint Stereo? | Richard Farrar
