"1st & 2nd Eb Alto Saxophones"

Good morning, all.

I have a client who would like staff labels to be formatted this way. I don’t see where to list “1st” and “2nd” in that position, nor how to force the &. Thoughts?

Many thanks as always.

Hi,

It’s not easy! A workaround could be to edit the names (in Edit Instrument Definition, so you just have to do it once) like this:

And set the Staff Labels (Inner) Paragraph Style to 0 pt and transparent. That way “1.2.” won’t show up.

But it means that you won’t get any inner staff labels (used for numbering) and e.g. have to manually enter “Percussion 1”, “Percussion 2”...

Thank you for this. This doesn’t look like a workaround for a condensed staff, correct?

Yes, it’s a condensed staff:

1st & 2nd Alto Sax.dorico (1,3 Mo)

Ah! I see. So, if I generate separate parts for the alto saxes, I’d need to write their proper names a different way. Perhaps as a different token?

Yes, you can see that I have changed the layout names in the small project above.

Very good. Many thanks for this.

Maybe someone will chime in with a better idea! But Dorico is not very flexible with staff labels.

And actually I was wrong about Percussion 1, 2 etc. They show up automatically in this project:

Inner staff labels seem to be used only for numbering condensed staves.

I think there’s another setting somewhere for me to adjust. This is what I get when I follow your suggestions:

Tokens don’t work in the Instrument Name editor, unfortunately.

To enter the ♭, you can use the Unicode, i.e. type 266DAlt(Opt)+X. Then select the ♭ and apply the Music Text character style (top left drop down menu) for a good spacing.

As for the unwanted numbers, try to go to Engraving Options > Staff Labels > Player numbers for condensed players and choose Stack vertically.

Then the numbers should follow the Staff Labels (inner) Paragraph Style, hence disappear.

That being said, I’m not sure why you have two instruments displaying. It should be because there is a slight invisible difference in the names (like a space before or after). Did you edit the name from the Edit instrument definition dialog? I was suggesting this to make sure that both Alto Sax have exactly the same name.

All is well now, except that the staff names still don’t condense. I did edit the name from Edit instrument definition dialog, and I can’t find any difference between labels. I’ll keep picking at it.

If you can’t figure it out, feel free to share the project here. You can remove all the notes, since the only question is about the setup and the options.

Retyped everything, and it’s now resolved. Thanks for all your sage advice!
