Is there a way to have Dorico automatically group the notes like the bottom staff?
Unfortunately, no. No matter what settings you choose in Notation options>Note grouping>Syncopation, Dorico will always break up the quater note in a short-long-short pattern like this as soon as a sixteenth note is involved.
Why, I have no idea, but in the meantime we’ll have to use forced duration.
It might be handy if the time signature popover recognized syntax such as [0.5+1.0+0.5]/4.
Any ideas on what the quickest process to combine the ties in the middle of the measure? I’ve got a whole lot of em to change.
Select the tied note – you can even select multiple notes by CMD/CTRL-click –
then press uo6
u unties the note(s)
o enables force duration
6 changes the note(s) to a crotchet/quarter note.
