2 more Cubase 15 questions / mute automation? record within MIDI event?

Hi there,

I’m using Cubase 15 Pro and I’ve run into a couple of issues that feel different from previous versions:

  1. Mute Automation:
When I click Mute on a track, Cubase automatically creates a Mute automation. I don’t want this — previously, the first automation lane would always default to Volume. Has this behavior changed? Is there a way to revert it to the old behavior?

  2. Recording in MIDI events / within MIDI editor:
Normally, when I want to add extra notes within an existing MIDI event, I press F2 and use the small record/control bar in the window to record. This no longer works — now I can only record a new MIDI event on top and then merge it, which is quite inconvenient. What settings or workflow changes are needed to restore the old behavior?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hi,

  1. What kind of track type do you mean?

  2. I believe, you are talking about MIDI Parts, not MIDI Events. Ensure, you press the Record button of the Transport Panel, not the Transport Bar. Even better is to use the Key Command. You have to be sure, the focus remains in the Key Editor (and the Record in Editor button has to be enabled).

It’s always better to make an issue per thread.

  1. Any track type does that. I press “M” for mute and it automatically creates the Mute Automation track which doesnt make sense?

  2. i talk about MIDI editor. when its open and i see midi notes and i wanna record some extra I cant. in other words: how do i quickly open the small taskbar/recording? in cubase 12 pro it was just F2 pressing.

    thanks

Sounds like automation is Write enabled (red “W” button).

There is the new feature that Cubase will display the last touched VST parameter in the topmost automation lane. You can find it in the Automation Panel → Settings.

Hi,

You are talking about the Transport Panel, which has the default Key Command F2. This is still available in Cubase 15.

when I press F2 it wants to change the track name or sth.?

can you tell where exactly i can change this?

Automation Panel → Settings
If you don’t have a button to open the Automation Panel look inside the Project menu. F6 is the default key command.

I think the OP was referring to the “floating” transport panel. The default key command is not F2 anymore since C13 or 14. It can be reassigned under key commands. It goes by the name “panel” or “window” (not in the studio right now) which led to even more confusion. Just use the search function in key commands - you’ll find it.

no its off.
here is a video of the problem. thanks for help:

Hi,

I’m sorry,the video doesn’t work on my side…

The most safe way is to trigger Record via the Key Command or from a hardware.

does it work now?

any update for the video?

Hi,

I see, now I understand the issue (with the help of the video). This is a new feature since Cubase 15, which shows the last used parameter in the Automation Lane. This speeds up the way, how to find the parameter from the list that the user wants to automate.

yeah but how do i fix it?

it doesnt make sense as u see in my video?

Hi,

You cannot fix it, it’s not a bug.

Please do something about this mute automation issue — it’s annoying as hell.

From the manual:

Last Touched Parameter
If you activate Show at Top, the last touched automation parameter is shown at top of the automation track list.

If you activate Show on Next Automation Track, the last touched automation parameter is shown on the next appended automation track.

For someone that is not using Cubase 15, is there a setting that turns off this automatic creation of Automation Tracks completely? If the user in the video above would touch another parameter, would that create yet another Automation Track?
