3rd track I've ever made, laugh all you like!

Hi All,

It’s my 3rd (apart from a few abandoned projects) attempt to make a Drumstep tune; so far (I think) my best… As I said, laugh all you like; but while you’re at it, feel free to let me know what you think. I would appreciate if someone can point out any mistakes, or let me know what I can do to improve it. I’ve been listening to this track, while making it, on and off for the past 3 weeks, and I don’t know anymore which bits sound good and which don’t…

…Also, I appreciate that this music (as I call it) may not be in everyone’s taste.

cheers

Did you mean dubstep (not drumstep)? Hard to believe this is your third tune. This sounds great to me. Are you using synths for this or primarily loops? Sounds like it could have ended at the 4:26 mark with the vocal sample

Thanks very much for that!

4.26 is indeed a good place to end the tune as it fades out nicely, I will definitely consider doing that…

…I did actually mean drumstep, which is a pretty new genre,(in my words) dubstep with a faster tempo- around 170bpm as oppose to 140 bpm and often with richer drums (people tend to say that it’s half-tempo drum n bass).

I didn’t use any loops whatsoever. In this tune everyting was made on albino, massive & razor, and drums with battery 3 and beat designer. I used a few ready samples for buildups (like the high freq windy sound (sorry don’t kknow better way to decribe it) and vocal samples of course.

thanks again

So many new styles with the name “step” attached such as trap step. No loops is very impressive . I listened through once but thought the mix was very well done. Impressive!

Ha ha, yeah, even “pornstep” (although im not too sure what that is)…

Thank you for that, didn’t expect such positive feedback though…

Well this is a very interesting track - I have a couple of critiques however. One thing was the Vocals, I couldn’t hear any reverb! Maybe I am missing the point or it is intentional - but it seemed like they would fit in a bit better with a bit of ambiance/space around them. The second thing was that I couldn’t figure out exactly what the chords were. Some melodic instruments - like a few of the wubs - seemed to be off doing their own thing while the bass and synths followed a different line. This started sounding very jumbled after awhile. Maybe a really strong defined bass in the foreground would help pull it together - or maybe some light pads.
Other than that it had a nice driving beat (maybe a bit harder kick?) and you really got those wobbles down! :sunglasses:

Strangely interesting but way too long…If you had a tune over this then it would carry it for the full length…but needs a tune…good production sound though !!!.Kevin

Yeah man, this is refreshingly interesting. I like the different sounds and mixes, swooshes and effects. At 2:35 you start a new part, I think maybe you can bring the synth more up in volume to build more contrast. I don’t really miss a bass part in this piece, sounds cool with all the other stuff going on. I would have put in some synth to echo that melody line from the short singing pieces, alternate the singing pieces with synths echoing it, I think might make it just more interesting, though, don’t get me wrong, it’s not boring. If this is really only your 3rd attempt I’ll say well done man and very creative. Go for it! Michael

Thanks very much for everyone’s input.

That might be a very good advise, I will try to add some more reverb to the vocals, and maybe some mild delay to create some spaces. I have to say that I did send the vocal tracks to a couple of FX’s, one of them with long reverb, and one with a smaller space with autopan as an extra input to that FX channel (not too sure it that was a good idea though), but maybe I didn’t send enough, or maybe I didn’t mix it down well enough for those elements to stand out…

I was kinda expecting this kind of comment. If you ever get a chance to find another minute, would you mind pointing out which parts of the track didn’t sound right to you? As I said, I’ve been listening to this too much and I have lost ability to spot these kind of things.

Thanks again for your help everyone. there’s some very useful comments here and I will take them all on board and try to make some more variations in the track to make it sound more interesting!
