4/4 to 12/8

There is a thread from 2023 about converting 12/8 to 4/4. At that time, there was no option except re-entering the piece.

I have a new piece that is is all in 4/4, but two of the major sections are based on 1/8-note triplets and might be better in 12/8.

Is there still no conversion method available? Thanks.

Here’s a few staves on the section I think should be in 12.

I don’t think it is possible right now without hacks.

If you have access to Sibelius you could export to XML, import in Sibelius, use the “Convert simple time to compound time” plug-in, then clean the minimum necessary, export to XML, import back in Dorico.

Not sure if it is quicker than hiding tuplets and inputting a fake Time Signature in Dorico.

I think you can do these sort of conversions in Cubase fairly easily, but you might lose some articulation and dynamic details.

It needs care.
I’d add some empty bars at the end of your section and add a stop line (shift-alt-I) after that (to protect notes)
Engage insert (I).
Select all the passage you want to change.
Filter select tuplets.
Hit Delete (don’t panic)
Change you time signature (add the return to 4/4 first) to 12/8
(The tricky bit…) Select everything that was not a tuplet in the original. Change its duration by adding a dot.
Disengage insert. Remove the stop line. Delete any surplus empty bars.

Sounds interesting! Thanks!

If I do it in 12, the conductor will want to conduct in 4. If I do it in 4, he’ll say, “Why didn’t you do this in 12 instead of using all these triplets.” That’s just how they are.

Personally, I would conduct in 4 but would want the score in 12 so it looked less complicated; and that’s probably what I will end up doing.
