5.1.70 update failing from Download Assistant

The last time I posted here, I was told there is no image support, so I can’t screen capture my error. I am not able to upgrade to 5.1.70 using the Steinberg Download Assistant. I get a dialog box:

Steinberg Download Assistant - Error
An error occurred while downloading ‘Dorico 5.1.70
Application Installer’.

Please try again later.

I’ve tried again later. Any advice?

Hi ! There is image support here, provided you have complied to some discourse rules, and I guess you have not been around for long enough to be authorized to post pictures (or files). I am not a specialist, so I cannot tell you how many posts you must have written or read to earn that possibility.
Anyway, you can use a direct download link to update dorico, such as this :
links

That is what Discourse calls Trust Levels and you need to get Trust Level 1 for images and attachements. The rules are described here.

What Operating System do you have, MacOS or Windows?

I’ve seen this error on my Windows system when I tried to download to a location that was not writeable. After changing the permissions it worked.

Larry, if you’re unable to download the installer via Steinberg Download Assistant, you can download it here:

Thank you all for such quick responses - sub-1-day time is very much appreciated.

I do indeed have Windows (11).

I will use the direct links for download as a last resort, but in the meantime, it’s probably a good idea that I correct the permissions on any directories (folders) that the Download Assistant needs to access. I know I didn’t manually mess with permissions, and I only have one login account, so I’m curious as to what could have changed.

Question for JuergenP - when you fixed permissions, do you remember what folder(s) it was on? I assume I’ll find them somewhere if I right click on the top-level folder and hunt through the ‘Properties’ menu? (I’m a Linux guy; Windows is not my forte.)

Thanks for the help all!

The folder can be set individually in your Download Assistant, so I don’t believe you will have the same folder. Mine was on drive D:\Stage and, because it is an external SSD drive, it was missing permissions.

Yeah, Linux is a bit different  Have a look in the settings to find the location. Then open a Windows Explorer and try to create an empty file or a folder in that location, if that works you are fine, if not you need to fix the permissions via the Explorer.

So… this is kind of not-good, as I’m nervous I can’t get the Download Assistant to work and in the future direct links might not be available…

I went into the folder that the assistant is set to save info (C:\Users<my-user-name>\Downloads\Steinberg) and could create and save both empty and non-empty files. Tried this in both the top folder and the sub-folder WIN64; both folders I could save files to.

Any other ideas as to what this could be? If someone from Dorico support staff wouldn’t mind walking me through a few other troubleshooting steps, I would greatly appreciate it! (As mentioned, I’m happy to use the direct links at some point, but it feels important to get the Download Assistant working.)

Thanks!

We will always provide direct links to download our applications, so you can rest easy on that point.

There might be some clues in the logs SDA is creating. I’m not completely sure where they are on Windows, but try looking in %APPDATA%\Steinberg: is there a Download Assistant folder there? If so, zip that up and attach it here, and I can see whether there are any obvious clues within.

I found the SDA log on Windows here

C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Download Assistant\Logs

Here are the logs. I don’t see any obvious culprits; script exited 0 status with nothing to stdout / stderr (perhaps normal on Windows).

As requested, I just zipped up the folder; logs are only 9k uncompressed.
Thanks for taking a look. I think I’ll go ahead and download via the direct links now. Would still love help if anyone thinks they might know the issue.
Thanks! - L
