6 months in with Cubase — loving it, but here's my wishlist

I’ve been using Cubase Pro 15 daily for about six months now, coming from a background in media composition, dialogue editing, and music production. It’s become my main DAW and honestly the feature depth has spoiled me for going back to anything else.

That said, a few things have come up repeatedly enough that I wanted to flag them as feature requests:

  1. Chord Pad Key Lock: An option to lock the key when switching Chord Pad presets, so the key doesn’t change every time you switch presets.
  2. Sampler Track placement: New Sampler Tracks created via the Media window currently land at the bottom of the project, rather than below the selected track. In a track heavy project, it’s a real annoyance to be working near the top, scroll all the way down to find the new track, then drag it back up to where you were working.
  3. Single Show/Hide Automation toggle: There’s currently no direct Show/Hide Automation command. The workaround is using track folding, which works okay on regular tracks, but on groups, where I do a lot of volume automation, folding closes the folder first, and the automation lane only appears once you reopen it. That means pressing a key twice just to see the automation. It would be much more useful to have a dedicated show/hide than a workaround.
  4. Zoom toggle, same as VariAudio: In VariAudio, holding Opt+Cmd toggles the Zoom tool, the same way Alt toggles the Pencil or Scissors tool depending on where the pointer is on the track in the main window. Bringing that same modifier key behavior to the main arrange window would be much better than the current process: selecting the zoom tool, zooming in, then having to switch back to the object tool. It just feels clunky by comparison. Would be great to have zooming unified across both windows.
  5. “Play from cycle” tied to cycle state: This currently seems to apply even when cycle is off. It should only trigger when cycle is actually active.
  6. Snapping Scissors to Hit-Points: I think it would be a great addition to snap the Scissors tool to audio hitpoints while holding Alt and another modifier.
  7. Track height same as folders: When I’m in a large project, I close my folder tracks to tidy up, and usually have them all set to the same size to fill the screen. But when I open a folder to view its tracks, they’re often left at whatever size they were previously, really small or really large, so I have to manually resize them to match the other folder tracks. It would be nice to have a checkbox in Preferences to link track and folder heights together.

None of these are dealbreakers; Cubase is genuinely excellent, but they’re the small frictions that come up often enough in daily use that I think they’d meaningfully improve the workflow. Curious if anyone else has run into the same things, or has workarounds I’m missing.

3: Track folding is not a workaround. That is what you can use as an Automation toggle command. Your issue seems to be attempting to toggle when you have selected both a folder group and other track types. But your workflow is not clearly explained. ‘Toggle selected track’ works only on a single track. You’d simply select the track and use the toggle. Or are you seeking to toggle the automation on multiple tracks?
5: There is no ‘Play from Cycle’. By ‘Play from Cycle’ do you mean the Start mode ‘Start from Cycle Start’? Or are you referring to something else? ‘Start from Cycle Start’ mode is already sensitive to the cycle ‘active’ status.
6: Don’t use the split tool. Select the event and use Alt+N or Alt+B to step through the hitpoints and then Alt+X to split at cursor.
7: What do you mean by ‘manually’? Are you doing this one track at a time? The quickest way to set track heights for a folder track and all the tracks contained within is to simply select the folder and all the tracks and drag up or down with the track resizing widget which appears when you place the cursor on a track border line. If selecting the folder and all the tracks within is the manual part slowing you down you could make a Project Logical Editor preset to do that automatically.

7: Or just Ctrl - Shift + wheel, meanwhile is possible to save a key command to set all of them with the desired height. (Zoom tracks 1 - 2 - 3 … Rows)
