Good day,
I have a few questions about the condensing feature. While I have figured out most of the stuff out for condensing, some things still trouble me. I’m not seeing the word “div./divisi” appear when the condensed parts play two or more different notes. I’m also not liking how Dorico keeps showing “a2” every 3 or so bars. My questions are these; how do I have Dorico automatically put “div./divis” above the notes, and how do I stop Dorico for showing “a2” every 3 or so bars? I’ve included my current project. Thanks for the help!
Marching Band Warm-Ups (Final).dorico (3.1 MB)
“Divisi” is used when a single section is divided into multiple parts – for example, when the first violins play two lines. In the case of condensing single players, it’s already a given that you’ve got two different lines in that staff (and the staff is labeled that way), so the simple presence of multiple notes indicates that the different players play different notes. “Divisi” would not be appropriate here.
Many people find that some number of these need to be hidden by hand. Looking at your score, Tbn 1/2 start out a2, for example, which is correct, and the a2 is repeated on subsequent pages as a reminder, because if you were starting on a later page, you might not realize that they’re a2. But then you get something like bars 41 and 43 – 41 has a “reminder” a2, and then 43 has another one because Dorico manages condensing in phrases that occur between rests; bar 43 is the start of a new phrase because it comes after a rest, so Dorico indicates that this new phrase is a2.
So, long story short is I need to manually hide all of the “a2’s” and just add staff text for the score and the individual parts for “div./divis” and “a2” when needed?
Yes, although think about which ones are useful. Personally, I would hide the one at bar 43 but would probably leave all the “reminder” ones at the starts of pages. (They won’t display that way in the parts.) Actually, thinking about it some more, I might even leave in the one at 43.
As I said above, I don’t think “divisi” is correct in these places, and I wouldn’t add it. If your first trumpets split in two, that’s divisi. If your second and third trumpets (on one staff) go from a2 to separate notes, that’s not divisi.
Correct. I was only going to use “divisi” when the staff shows the condensed parts are playing two or more notes.
Are you talking about something like trombones in bar 42 50? That’s not divisi.
No. I’m talking about bar 51 for 2nd & 3rd trumpets and 1st & 2nd trombones.
I think you mean bar 50 – and that’s what I meant, too! That’s not divisi. That’s two different players playing two different notes.
This staff is labeled as having two different players. The first bar is marked a2 to indicate that both players play the single set of notes. Nothing is needed in the second bar.
You are indeed correct! I was treating the instruments for the score as “single” instruments and not individual ones. I had a blonde moment/brain fart.
Well, thanks for the help as always! Time to take a break, and then get back to finishing this! Thanks again!
