Subject: Request for Backward Compatibility in Cubase Projects
Dear Steinberg Team,
I am a licensed Cubase user. I would like to request that Cubase project files be made backward compatible.
Many professionals collaborate with other studios and composers who use different Cubase versions. It creates unnecessary difficulties when a project created in Cubase 14 cannot be opened in Cubase 12, even by licensed users.
Please consider adding an option such as “Save Project As Previous Version” (for example, Save as Cubase 12 Project), similar to what many professional software applications provide. This would greatly improve collaboration and reduce the need to export stems or rebuild projects.
I started my templates for C14 in C12 just for this reason (saved as the former RIFF format)… Now I can start my projects from my templates in C14 or C15, and they are backwards compatible (until they reach a certain size - in which they are converted to the new RIF2 format).
For this reason above I advice everyone who works and share projects with different clients and/or colleagues to have C12 installed… and agreeing in which version to start out in before any projects are put to life.
Considering your current license gives you access to earlier versions of the software at no extra cost, that backwards compatibility is not even necessary. If you’re working with Cubase 12 users, just install 12 on your machine. Your 14 license should work with it.
