A graphical glitch and repetitive crashes during save

Hi, community!

I have encountered 2 problems and I think it’s ok to report them. The first one (something I think I’ve seen has been reported again in the past) is the crash/freeze during Save. I have encountered this error on both my machines (MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max on macOS Sonoma 14.5 and Mac mini 2018 i5 on the same OS).

Here is the diagnostics file.
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.1 MB)

The other one is a graphical glitch I noticed on my MacBook on the Dynamics Palette.

Those problems are not setting back my work since for the dynamics I use the popover most of the time and the Save issue happens only when I manually go to File->Save.

Lastly, something I have encountered in the past is a total freeze when using the search function under Help menu (that was before I learnt about the “J” command, but anyways.)

I think my report is useful and I am sure the dev team is already aware of those possible bugs.

Best!

Happy “Cake Day” :cake: (the anniversary of your first appearance on the Forum).

thank you!

There are no crash logs in the diagnostics you uploaded. I wonder whether rather than Dorico crashing, in fact it is hanging, i.e. you end up with the spinning beachball and you end up force quitting the application? If so, next time you encounter that problem, please run Activity Monitor and create a spin dump using the button in the toolbar, then zip up and attach the resulting file here.

The graphical problem you see with dynamics overprinting in the panel has been reported before, but as yet we don’t know what causes it. For the time being, try resizing the project window a tiny bit from any corner, and you should see that the glitch remedies itself.

Dear Daniel,

Thank you very much for your tip. The next time I 'll encounter the spinning ball on save I will create a spin dump. In the meanwhile, I just had a crash that is maybe related to the graphical glitch because the moment I clicked on the accidentals pallete Dorico quit unexpectedly. Also, I tried resizing the app window but it had no noticeable effect.

Here is the Diagnostics report for this particular crash, just in case it could be proven useful.

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.3 MB)

It just did it (spinning wheel during Save) so here is the Spindump during the hanging of the app.

Spindump.zip (419.7 KB)

I’m not expert at reading the runes of what the audio engine is doing, but from my reading of the spindump, it looks as if Dorico is running as normal, waiting for the audio engine, and I think the audio engine is also running normally – it appears to be processing audio. Perhaps @Ulf will have a chance to stop by and see if he agrees with my assessment (though he’s now on holiday for Christmas, so I don’t know how much we will see of him until the New Year).

Thank you. Also, I’d like to add that I am saving directly to an iCloud folder because I am frequently switching between my desktop and laptop. I don’t know if it’s relevant though.

Hi @aquarius55 , does the spinning come on every auto save cycle or only here and there?
And in order to rule out the iCloud, please make a copy of that project and store it locally. Then see if that also yields the beach ball at some stage.
Thanks

And also the spindump does not look suspicious to me.

Hi! The spinning wheel happens I’d say about 1 out of 15-20 times (or more?) and only when I manually click File->Save. It seems like auto-save is completely fine and also, because I am used on hitting cmd-s very often I haven’t encountered an issue using the shortcut ( I don’t know if there is an actual difference at all btw). Also, I’ve copied my file locally and I will work from there for the next few days and I will report if the problem persists.

Best.
