I’ve been building up some expression map for SWAM modeled instruments and my results so far have been very encouraging. Sometimes with a modeled instrument, assumptions about expression maps have to be modified. I’ve mentioned this in another conversation, so I’m not going down that particular rathole just now. Suffice to say that some techniques that might be thought of as add-ons must be base techniques. There’s more, but let’s not go there just now.
The Playing Techniques lane in the Key Editor is very helpful to see what’s going on. I wish it could also show when there’s a conflict between techniques. For example, I’m currently dealing with a woodwind situation where I’ve notated a “growl” (which I’ve accounted for in both playing and playback techniques), but I only see a “natural” in the playing technique lane. There’s a spot earlier where I’ve specified an overblow in the same way and that’s coming through fine.
I’d love to see a spot in that techniques lane so I could see when a requested technique has not been supported. It would also be nice to know exactly why. Perhaps there could be an analysis tool that could look at an instrument across a flow and report this sort of failure in a more complete way.
