A matter of style: Placement of accidentals that could fit on ledger lines

Which is your preferred style (top: Sibelius, bottom: Dorico)?

(I could not find any setting that controls when an accidental can be put “under” a notehead. Is the lack of such a setting an indication that this is a “forbidden” placement? Further, there seems to be no setting to control the space to prevent collision with the ledger line.)

The “b” would certainly not “fit” under, and probably neither would the natural, so perhaps, to be consistent, the # should be to the left as well, but with a small space.

but then, in

it feels a bit ‘loose’ (or?)

Hi @Mats_Frendahl, you probably changed this Engraving Option:

With factory settings you get this (in Dorico of course):

Yes, true, I prefer full-length ledger lines.

So it is a small “fix” for a future version (though I’m still running 6.0.22, so it could have been fixed in the latest), and the placement is correct with the right option as well.

But what about the actual placement? To the left, or “crossing” ledger lines, like Sibelius?

@Mats_Frendahl, personally, I like Christian’s example best! However, if you must have the full-length ledger lines, then I prefer not to have the accidentals overlap the lines — I have enough vision troubles without elements competing with each other! Of course that’s just my opinion — others may feel differently.
