A router plugin

hey stienberg and everyone.

I think this would be a really helpful feature to have a plugin or at least something you do know better and I don’t but I say this example as a plugin, have a router plugin that you put it in the middle of the like 3 or 4 chian plugins like frequency or underwater and you do want to send a group channel to this track but not as a normal output or send that goes first to pre gain, you want it to be in the middle of it like if i could draw it

Frequency

compressor

ROUTER PLUG IN

Ultrashper

this saves so much time so you don’t have to make another group track to just make a routing go as you want.

I don’t understand the request at all.

Do you want the plugin to receive an audio signal from elsewhere and insert it into the channel? That should be fairly easy to achieve, maybe such a plugin already exists from a 3rd party vendor. Otherwise with the help of some AI it should be possible to create it.

Or do you want the plugin to send the audio signal to another channel?

How much time does it take you to set-up the routing using a group track?:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I kind of understand what you’re suggesting–but it sounds like it would make the routing of a project harder to follow.

I want it to be routed in the middle of my plugins

As I mentioned with plugins

plugin 1

plugin 2

plugin 3

{plugin 4} Router Plugin (so the signal comes here first and the 3 plugins above don’t affect the signal)

plugin 5

plugin 6

It’s like a virtual input/output as a plugin

It’s not hard if you know what you’re doing, actually.

and also it’d be more organised.

imagine havig router plugin just in your insert inspector instead of so many group tracks just for routing.

By “harder to follow,” I mean opaque. You’d be hiding routing behind an insert.

You can easily monitor and manage Group tracks (and all other tracks) using the MixConsole and the project window. Being able to manage sources & destinations, meters, faders, mute/solo status, automation, processing, etc. is important. Hiding some of those signal paths inside insert slots doesn’t seem more organized to me. You’d have to open and inspect inserts to get an overview of the project’s routing.

In my experience, it doesn’t take much time to create a Group track and route a few channels to it.

I already asked:

Why? What is the sense of that?

What about the signal in the track/channel? What happens to that?

You can do this with Blue Cat Audio’s Connector: Blue Cat's Connector - Audio and MIDI Streaming Plug-In (VST, AU, VST3, AAX)

In the screenshot I have two tracks a beat loop on top and an atmos loop on the bottom. I have a Frequency → Connector → Vocoder on the beat loop track. I have a PitchShifter → Underwater → Connector → Morph Filter on the atmos track.

On the right you can see how I have both Connector plugins configured.

This works, the atmos track gets the beat track after Frequency but before Vocoder and is mixed into the audio coming out from Underwater. You can use the ‘Thru Level’ and ‘Rcv Level’ knobs on the receiving Connector plugin to control how much of each signal to use.

FYI, this is also a way to get feedback loops inside Cubase so watch your monitor level.

What you’re asking is similar to a patcher type plugin which allows you to create complex audio routing chains without having to follow the linear arrangement of the channel strip.
