A way to make slash regions space out evenly

Dear Dorico team

First of all, thank you for a wonderful product. It is so easy to produce great looking scores in general. I have a request though.

It would be great to be able to have the slashes in slash regions space out evenly. I don’t think this looks very good, to be honest. I guess i can fix it manually, but it would be very neat to just tic a box in layout or engraving options.

Kind Regards

Jacob

That looks a little bit weird. Could you share the document, or just a part of it that shows the problem?

Here is the dorico file. The problem is in the full score. So far it looks like there is no way to fix it.

I guess the issue will be that on other staves, there are lots of short notes. Slashes are spaced like any other notes. I’m not sure how I feel about having the slashes not coincide with the beats to which they actually coincide.

Yes, stuff like this.

Yes exactly. There are some 16th notes runs going on in some of the upper instruments.

I think it would make sense to space them out evenly, as it just looks a lot more clean. It is not really helpful to have the slashes space out like that. From my point of view it just looks more janky than good, or helpful.

But thank you for replying so fast and concise Daniel!

Yes that is why the slashes look like they do. But it would be nice to have the slashes just space out evenly regardles.

As @dspreadbury said, I don’t think it’s a good idea. The conductor needs to see every beat aligned.

I don’t agree that every conductor need to see the slash voices spaced like that. I conduct myself, and would rather have the option to space them out evenly for a cleaner look. Not saying it should be the default or anything like that, just an option.

Since slashes mean you can play anything you deem appropriate, they do not necessarily need to line up.

Exactly this!

Actually, since the concept of slashes is to denote music which is arbitrary by nature, the default setting should probably be evenly spaced. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a hand-engraved score where slashes followed the rhythm other than to outline beat pattern and time signature. There’s a reason why we prefer full measure rests be centered rather than at the beginning of a measure where they, technically, belong.

Very well put.
