Abnormal High Latency from MIDI Keyboard

Hello
About two weeks ago, I submitted the following problem to Steinberg technical support:
”I’m experiencing significant latency (several tenths of a second) when I use my MIDI keyboard to enter notes in a Cubase project. This happened suddenly, and I don’t remember doing anything that might have caused it. It only occurs in the project I was working on (no problems with other projects or when I use a VST instrument in standalone mode). I don’t know what could have caused this problem. Do you have any ideas?”

Steinberg support told me that my project might be corrupted. So I completely rebuilt the project from scratch, re-importing each track. The problem did indeed disappear, but it required a lot of work (reinstalling the settings for each instrument, re-importing the effects plugins, redoing the mix, etc.).

I thought this problem was fixed, but today I worked on another project that had no issues before, and I’m experiencing the same kind of latency when using my MIDI keyboard on any track.

Does anyone know about this problem, or if not, can anyone tell me what might be causing it because I don’t want to completely redo this project like last time… especially since if the cause isn’t clearly identified, it’s likely to happen again with another project.

Thanks

Hi,

Do you use any plug-in(s) on the Stereo Out bus or any Control Room > Monitor bus by any chance?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Have you checked whether the delay occurs on the MIDI or the audio side?
  • Do the latency values in the studio setup deviate from the normal values when the project is loaded and the delay occurs?
  • What are the latency values?
  • Are you using track VSTi (instrument track) or rack VSTi (MIDI track)?
  • Have you tried replacing the VSTi with another one?

If you mean by latency “hitting a note on the keyboard and the sound comes delayed”, 99% of the time this is caused by one or more plugins adding latency in the signal chain (as @Martin.Jirsak already wrote, can be also in Control room). Have you tried “Constrain Delay Compensation”?

Hello,
Yes, I placed a mastering plugin on the stereo out bus to do some intermediate tests before working on the audio mix.

Among all the attempts I made to try and solve this problem, I bypassed the mastering plugin… but it didn’t change anything (the same delay persisted). In fact, the plugin needs to be completely removed, and then everything goes back to normal.

Thank you for your help. This problem is solved, and I learned something new :slightly_smiling_face: !

See my reply to Martin : Removing the plugin from the stereo bus fixed this problem (no more delay).

Thank you for your reply.

Hi,

Bypassing the plug-in doesn’t mean, the latency goes away. You have to Disable it or remove it completely.

That’s what I did !
Could you tell me how I can mark this topic as resolved?

Thank
