About to jump in on a new win 11 AMD Zen5 build…
Anyone suggest any processors** less** suitable for Cubase ….will be a clean start music PC…
Probably start off with built in graphics for budget. might add a GPU for 2 screens if I get rich and famous soon.
Thanks in advance.
The most recent release, the 9800x3D, seems to score very high in gaming.
In and by itself that doesn’t mean much for us running DAWs, but the older 3D-Vcache models performed better during testing when using Virtual Instruments. So if you can hold off maybe one of the main testers will try them out and you can compare performance.
Here’s a link to the DAWbench test including the 9xxx-series Ryzen chips, but without the x3D parts:
Sorry if this is a derail… but is there a DAW focused benchmark that shows ‘all’ CPUs tested? Like DAWBench but where I can compare my 8700k to some new CPU.
Not that I know of. The problem with running DAWbench has been that over time computers just get so powerful the test has to be adjusted, and I think part of that was finding different plugins that are heavier loads. Therefore once that’s done the numbers won’t be comparable.
Maybe best you can do is go year by year and give the 8700K an index of 100 and just do the percentage uplift per generation. So if test 1 has both the 8700K and 9700K and the latter is 15% better the 9700K gets an index of 115. And then when the next gen comes out you compare that to the 9700K, so a 20% improvement would be 115*1.2=138. Now you’d know that last CPU is 38% better than your old CPU.
I don’t think that will be perfectly accurate but at least it’s something. Though surely a lot of work.
Actually, I think it might be a waste of time. Your CPU is so old that if you’re going to upgrade then just set a budget and pick the best option.
I’ve got an Ultra 7 265 planned. I have no idea what kind of improvement to expect. I get what you mean though.
Just make sure to update your BIOS – you will need AGESA 1.2.0.2a to solve the iLok issue with Zen5.
Other than that minor headache, Zen5 is great! Enjoy!
So I ended up buyout a 7950x + ASROCK x6703 mobo. There have been a few hiccups… the RME UFX (usb) seems to get dropped by Cubase once in a while.
I’ve connected it via a PCIe usb card now and it hasn’t happened since so fingers crossed.
But performance! DAMN. What pushed 80% on the Cubase CPU meter is now 18%ish. Impressive.
I just got back from the computer store. Tomorrow I plan to put together a new 9800x3d system. My music stuff is just a hobby; my computer has to handle all of my goofy little hobbies.
…but my current system is a very old i7 6700k that I built almost 10 years ago. Moving from old sata drives to m.2 drives. Complete overkill with 64gb of RAM for when I’m playing with labs in virtual box.
Hearing 80% > 18% when comparing an 8th gen i7 to a 7950x almost has me excited enough to start putting it together now. I wonder if I’ll be able to use Ozone without my system dropping out every couple of seconds.
