Access to Windows "Printing Preferences" directly from Dorico Print mode

In order to print on 11x17 paper with the printer I have (Epson WF7710), I need to first open the printing preferences dialog - paper/quality tab, and for “paper source”, select “rear feed”…see image. In Finale, I was able to open this dialog directly from the file menu in Finale, which was convenient. Using Dorico, to print on 11x17 paper, I must go to Windows settings, etc. etc. and set this, which is less convenient. Could you possibly add a link somewhere in Dorico’s Print mode to open the Windows Printing Preferences dialog for the currently selected printer? Perhaps right-click on the printer name, and select “Printing Preferences”? Thanks. I love to use Dorico, very comfortable with it now. Vast improvement from Finale!

You are not the first to request this. Perhaps this will be possible at some point.

Hi,

I also need to acces the printing preferences in Dorico for Windows, as any other Windows program does. When I want to print in draft quality, I cannot access to this option directly from Dorico, which is strange, as it is a standard option in any other Windows app I use.

What can be the reason? It is such a basic feature.

I believe it was explained in another thread that this is a limitation in the underlying Qt framework that Dorico uses.

I know it’s not as convenient, but you can always change the printer properties outside of Dorico, and then change them back later. Or, if there’s a certain setting that you use often (like draft), you can create a duplicate printer object that’s configured that way, and then choose that printer in Dorico.

Thanks, Aaron.

Yes, that is not convenient. Those limitations make an expensive software like Dorico look less professional.

I wonder if Mac users have the same problems accesing printing options…

No

Thanks, Jesper.

I hope Dorico will not become a Mac-oriented software, as I have no intention in quitting my Windows computers. No way.

Reminds me the recent “lets do the fonts-thing the Apple-way” changes in Dorico. Maybe it is just paranoia…

I am a diehard Windows user. Windows was handling fonts the wrong way and lying to you about which variants were available. This was a change with a little short-term pain, but long-term benefits. (And, as with the printer options issue, I believe it was brought on by changes in the Qt framework, not a Dorico design decision.)

I agree that it’s not as convenient as being able to access printer options directly, but If your use case is that you sometimes want to print in Draft, then it takes just a few minutes to set up a Draft printer object, and then no time it all to use it whenever you want in Dorico (or in any other app). If you’re someone who frequently changes lots of printer settings, then I agree it can be a hassle.

You also have the option of exporting PDFs from Dorico, which is very fast, and then printing from your PDF app, where you can access your printer settings.

(Oh, and welcome to the forum, @ned1!)
