Hi Any suggestions to a better spacing. Se attached file. I got 30 flows in the same project, looking very good, but a few 6/8 flows where the spacing ( accidentals) is not looking good. I tried note spacing but the result wasn’t much better.
Too little information. We would need at least to see an image of the entire system in Engrave mode with Signposts on; or better still, an excerpt of the actual Dorico file showing these and surrounding measures. If one overfills a system, automatic spacing is unreliable.
The long and short of it is that the system is overfilled, either because you’ve set Library > Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Casting Off to a fixed number of bars per system, or because you’ve manually forced extra bars onto this system (either using the Make Into System button in the left panel of Engrave mode, or by adding System Breaks that wait for each other, or by using the comma and period keys - these last three possibilities rely on the same mechanism.
It might be that you could manually adjust the note spacing to borrow space from the second visible bar, but the barlines extending downwards indicate that a stave below the bounds of the screenshot exists within the same system, and may well contain notes (and perhaps accidentals) in the second bar.
Reconsider your fixed casting off, or make sure that System Break and Frame Break signposts are visible (from View > Signposts) and then adjust or remove them (ensuring that any that remain aren’t set to Wait For Next in the properties panel).
Yes I forced bars so it fits to one page. But it is only a few bars among 100 bars looking fine. Isn’t there a way adjust these few places ?
You could insert a note spacing change for just those few bars to tighten things up, but that might cause other issues. You could also play around with slight manual changes with the Note Spacing tool.
(When you’re posting a screenshot like that, it’s helpful to include the system fullness indicators on the right – the boxes with the percentages that show how full the system is. Or you can post your project file, or a cut-down version of it, so that users can make more specific suggestions.)
I guess you did this to fit this section on one page?
If you are working on a score, maybe you could decrease the space size slightly. Nine staves for one page tells me you have the space size rather large.
If you want to do that for one page only, make a page break at the top and set the size in the properties panel.
Ok I uploaded a screencast including the boxes with the percentages
Yes thank you I changed it again
As has already been said, put a Note Spacing Change at the start of this flow (select the first note in any stave in Engrave mode, then Engrave menu > Note Spacing Change).
Turn on the first property and set it to something much smaller. Then hit OK.
It should put a signpost on the page, allowing you to go back in (by double clicking on it) and adjusting the values, so experiment until you find the best results.
Those systems are very overfull – you should aim to keep those percentages under 100%.
It looks to me like your staves are very large for that size paper. You might try going to Layout Options > Page Setup > Space Size and choosing a smaller space size. This will make the staves and all notation elements smaller, so that you can fit more into one system, and more systems on a page.
Do you really need this huge rastral size? It looks like Size 1 or 2.
Try Size 3 and increase the gap between the staves to reduce the gap between the systems.
Thank you I will try the “note spacing change” per flow. I didn’t know that function controlling only a small part of the page.
And yes I know the systems are pretty full and a big rastral size. This is because it has to be a A5 paper size and should be easy to read.
Thank you, Note spacing for just a few systems made it perfect. Thank you all for your help.
Now that the question has been answered, do you mind satisfying my curiosity about your breath marks? What’s your reasoning for placing breath marks before the breaks?
