Add missing rests

Hi there,
I am unsure how to get a semibreve rest in bar 1 to display (in the upstem voice - orange).

Various support posts suggest that it can be done by toggling the ‘starts voice’ on/off, but I do not have an option here.

You can enter rests manually. Go to the first bar and change to the orange voice and enter the value rest you want. You have to use force duration here. [If it does not show there’s some option for that I cant quite recall at the moment.]

How many voices are in this fugue? If you are following strict 18C rules and logic technically you should put in all the rests in all the voices, as JSB usually did. But the music here is clear at the start without the rests anyway.

Ross, if this is the theme of a fugue, you should actually put it into one voice in the upper staff. Then select all notes from bar two, second beat and press m.
This will move the music to the below staff, but still keeps it as part of the upper system (if that makes sense).

You don’t need to completely start over again: select the green bit and >Paste special>Move to Staff above. Now make sure, everything is in the same voice (colour). If not, select everything and >Voice>ChangeVoice>Upstem Voice 1.
Now proceed as described above.
Dorico will sort out the rests for you.

Thanks for the suggestion, but annoyingly that method positions the semibreve rest at beat 1, not centred in the bar.

Try deleting the manually entered rest, then place the caret on beat 1, in upstem voice 1, press Shift+B and type “rest” in the popover.
