Add support for pinch-to-zoom Mac trackpad gesture in Nuendo

Hello,
Please consider adding gesture support to Nuendo that allows pinch-to-zoom in editor and arranger windows. This is a feature available in most DAWs and is a workflow enabler, particularly when mobile.
Thanks in advance for considering.

Welcome. If you weren’t already aware, you can Cmd+Scroll and Shift+Cmd+Scroll (mouse or pad) to zoom horizontally and vertically. There’s also a free utility called PinchBar that allows you do to this if you’d prefer. I used to use it myself but now prefer more granular (an universal) control with the built-in commands. It also keeps my mind focused on similar types of controls with event volume, etc.

You’ve already got this flagged as feature request, so we’ll see

Thanks for the reply and info Thor.HOG. I do use those controls currently, only issue is it requires two hands. I wasn’t aware of PinchBar, so cheers for mentioning. Hopefully the team will consider native support for this feature. It’s a small detail I realize, but IMHO would improve usability and align with common practice.

I totally get it, and it’s valid. From a UX perspective, I think it’s clear that the first thing Mac users do is pinch/spread for bi-directional zoom. It’s intuitive to us. For me, it was so intuitive that rather than learning the way it’s done in the software, I went out of my way to get a 3rd party utility. And obviously enough people want this that a dude had to write up a free app to do it, so… Though I eventually trained myself to do it Cubase’s way, even today I’d rather use pinch/spread. So I’m right there with you, and would love to see options for trackpad gestures if it’s feasible. Cheers.

Follow-up post in case it helps others: H and G are key mapped to zoom in and out in Nuendo, effectively letting me accomplish one handed what pinch-to-zoom would have done. This was a delightful discovery!

You know, I thought to say that too. They’re great when your hands are already on the keyboard, but of course are horizontal only. Which I think is the overall challenge of the “pinch” gesture. Pinch/stretch are, at their core, 2D scaling-zoom features. There have been several “pinch/stretch” requests here, but I’m not exactly sure if people just mean “horizontal-only” or full 2D zooming. Both (meaning “full”) would be a bit unwieldy, if not counterproductive. If it’s “horizontal-only,” then they already have that with the Cmd+Scroll. If it’s 2D, then I think a logical feature requirement would be distinct identification of vertical-pinch vs horizontal-pinch, which MacOS doesn’t expose as separate gestures, and why even PinchBar has this limitation.

My gut tells me we’re not going to see it, and invariably these discussions tend to arrive at the same conclusion of “oh, I can do it this way” which most likely pushes feature-consideration to the back of the list (my opinion, I have no idea).

Agree. For now I am using G and H and also just reassigned zoom in vertically/zoom out vertically to adjacent keys so I have a local cluster of ‘zooming’ key commands. Thankfully two finger swipe is supported for quick scrolls through timelines. So, I guess that makes this resolved  And, there’s always the added bonus of community that stems from discussion! So, thanks for the chat Thor.HOG. Cheers
