Adding a Tablature staff under an existing staff containing notation

Hello all, Refugee from Finale here . . . So far I’m really liking Dorico.

I do have a question about adding tablature to an existing staff. Well, I can’t figure out how to do it! So, assuming you have a solo staff for guitar, in standard notation. I already see how to add another staff under it, say, for instance, if I decide to add a second guitar. But how do I add a second staff of Tablature?

I used a work around for one piece of music . . . by starting with a Guitar AND Tablature staff from scratch in the setup section. Then copied and pasted the notation into it. It worked ok, but it still required a lot of editing to the Tab staff. Wouldn’t it be easier to be able to add the Tab staff under the notation staff and input the tablature from scratch?!

Thanks, JFA

Hi Notebeam, welcome to the forum.

If you want to add tablature to guitar1, you go to Layout options.

In the Fretted Instrumens section you can set wether you want to show Notation only, Tablature only, or both. And you can set that per fretted instrument.

Be sure to select in the righthand column for which layout you want to set that. It’s possible to have Tablature not in the score, but visible in the Part Layout

Hi, TonH . . .

Thank you very much!

So my stumbling block was thinking I needed to “add” tablature to the score before being able to “show”/”hide” it! I wish the documentation had made that clear . . . ?!

So it looks like the tablature is just sort of there for fretted instruments and just needs to be uncovered, so to speak. That’s great, but the resulting tablature staff is filled in by some default setting and still requires some tedious editing. If possible I would prefer to fill in the tabs manually from scratch.

In any case, it’s still better than how tablature worked in Finale, that is; WHEN it worked.

Thanks again, JFA

Glad I could be of help.

If you search “add tablature” in the online manual you get this

Well, there’s a fretted instrument. And there’s music
And that can be notated in different ways

You can:

I have already input notes directly into Tablature . . . I was referring to the case where tablature is shown by default, such as in the case where I used “layout options” show/hide Tablature, because in that case the Tabs showed with input already there. So it means I had to edit.

As for showing Tablature in the score, I have done it already too. So I’m not sure what I’m missing here.
