Adding an instrument to a player in the big band template

I am arranging a piece for big band and have started with the template. I want the alto sax 1 to double with soprano sax and have added the extra instrument in set up mode. When I in write mode press Shift + I, Dorico should write “To soprano” in the chart and automatically change to the correct key. But nothing happens. What do I do wrong?

Did you put the soprano in the same player as the alto? I don’t know what Shift-I has to do with anything. In Write mode->Galley view, you should see both instruments. In Page view, the instrument changes.

Welcome to the forum!

Dorico handles doubling and instrument changes differently than other notation software. Here’s a link to the manual, which has a link to a YouTube video about the topic.

Sorry, forgot the welcome. Shift-I is add interval.

Edit: and as @charles_piano says below add instrument to player, so my bad.

Shift+I is also Add Instrument (to a player) in Setup mode, hence maybe the confusion?

Ah, thanks @charles_piano, never use that.

Thanks for all good answers! I was not aware of the galley view (I’m an absolute beginner in Dorico). The link from John_Lilja was informative and helped a lot.

Thanks again!
