Adding barline without affecting system break

Dear Dorico forum,

I am writing without a time signature and would like to add a barline in the middle of a system without causing a system break.

Any ideas?

Hi Simon, Dorico tends to prefer to put system breaks at barlines as that’s often a convenient and ‘safe’ place to put them, but you can put system breaks anywhere - just select any item at the position where you want the break, and input the break - if you have Pro: in Engrave mode, press Shift-S; if you have Elements: in Write mode, choose Edit>System Break.

Also make sure that in Setup > Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Casting Off, “Allow open bars to be split across system breaks” is activated.

Thank you for your response. By locking the system in engrave mode I was able to input the barline in the middle of the measure.
