Adding dynamics

  1. I was following Anthony’s instructions via Youtube about adding dynamics to a score. I wanted to add a “hairpin” crescendo marking. The hairpin appeared, but it appeared above the stave and I couldn’t find a way to get it under the stave. What going on with this.
  2. What is the command for placing a text rehearsal note above the stave?

Shift+X will create text at a particular rhythmic position. Shift+A will create Rehearsal Marks.

Is it a vocal stave?

Pressing F will flip items to the other side of the staff.

I am using Shift A for the hairpin crescendo, BUT it appears above the stave no underneath. What’s the fix.

Use Shift-D for dynamics

Shift+A creates rehearsal marks, not dynamics. Did you mean Shift+D?

Dynamics are created above vocal staves by default, and below other staves. If you want to move a dynamic to the other side of the staff, use F, as @DanielMuzMurray indicates.

So when I’m writing a simple lead sheet, Dorico assumes i’m writing a vocal piece, and to have the dynamic marking appear underneath, I need to add an instrument when I’m setting it up. Is that correct?

If you start with this template

You have created a voice player, with a voice intrument

But when you edit the instrument definition you could remove the vocal staff checkbox, so it won’t have all the vocal settings.

Reason why vocal staves behave differently is probably to make room voor the lyrics
