Adding extra staff to player with two instruments - bug?

I’m doing some sketching on a piano line within an orchestral score. I went to add an extra staff and got a surprise.

This particular player has two instruments - piano and celesta. When I go to add an extra line to the piano part it simply forces the celesta lines to be shown for the entire score instead of adding an extra piano staff.

Deleting the celesta from the player allows for the proper behavior.

I’m guessing this shouldn’t be happening - shouldn’t I be able to add an additional staff to a player with multiple instruments?

Hi @michaelstarobin, I can confirm half of your issue: if I go in Galley view (where all staves are visible even if Instrument Change is active), I am able to add a staff to the Piano Grand Staff.
If I switch to Page view, then I confirm that both instruments are visible (which means Instrument Change is not working as expected).
Interestingly no issue if I use an Ossia, instead:

Not sure why this unexpected behaviour is happening.

  • Until someone offers a better solution, you can use Manual Staff Visibility, for now.

  • Another way, if you need more staves for the piano, to sketch, is to increase the Nr. of staves in the Instrument Definition (clicking on the there dots near the instrument name in Setup mode) for the whole piece.

I thought of using the ossia lines as additional sketch lines, but they don’t play back (which they shouldn’t for the primary purpose.)

In my case deleting the additional instrument is more elegant as I can add the extra staff as needed as opposed to having it from the beginning and having to hide it all the time. The extra line is only for sketching. When I go to score, I’ll end up losing the extra line as the material gets orchestrated elsewhere. I can then add back the celesta to the player if needed. It’s a workaround.

thanks.

It’s indeed a known limitation:

Cannot you add a new stave then use Cutaways?
And of course Cutaways can be manual only for the extra staff.
