Adding flow to an existing arrangement

Sometimes, you might want to make a derivative arrangement from one you have already made. Two examples might be as follows:

  1. You have arranged a pop song for three horns plus vocalist. You want to make an arrangement of the same song for one horn.

  2. You have written an organ accompaniment for a hymn. You would like to add a part for the congregation.

Would we want to add a second flow so that we can copy or delete material from the existing arrangement into a new arrangement to which we can add new parts?

There are multiple options. You can always add a flow and do what you like in it. Or you can duplicate a flow which creates a copy that can act as a template. I’ll typically do this when I want to customize a flow for playback by adding staccatos, doing odd things with slurs, etc. to get the desired output out of the playback engine (or NotePerformer) without screwing up the version meant for printing.

I might duplicate the flow, add the horns to flow #2. I could mute/unmute the non-horns as needed while I worked. Once done, you could remove the non-horns from flow #2’s layout, or you create an additional layout for flow #2 that only included the horns.

For the second item, I would do the same thing, but with one flow. Add the congregation to the flow but not include them in the “main” layout and create a 2nd layout with just the congregation.

Thank you. That sounds like a good approach.
