Adding measures for intro to existing score

Hi All,

I imagine this topic has been covered ad nauseam, but searching for it on the forum is returning results like adding a de-esser plugin. I have also tried using the search engine built into the Dorico app with no useful results. Well, I did find the shift+B to add measures, but it is not working the way I need it to work. I have a score that starts with rehearsal marker A, and an open repeat sign. Shift+B adds my eight measures after the repeat, and after marker A. Not to mention the measures it adds are so narrow they are useless. nCan someone point me in the right direction, please? The screen shot shows what I am seeing.

Many thanks,
Lou

I imagine the first note (G) has its starts voice property set.

searching for it on the forum is returning results like adding a de-esser plugin.

That sounds like you got search results from Cubase and other sections. For the future, you can narrow searches to just Dorico.

Shift+B adds measures and beats at the beginning of the current selection. It doesn’t affect system objects like meters and barlines, so you’ll have to just redo the start-repeat barline.

The measures being squished is because they have no bar rests. This is because no voice is “on” at the beginning. Try this: Add a note at the very start, and then delete it.

Of course they are narrow: you have system breaks on every line. If you want Dorico to space the music reasonably, you cannot start with an override.

Thank you all for your answers.

I have a different question, please: Starting from a finished score, Can I add 8 measures at the beginning and have Dorico add two additional staffs (is each staff or line called a system?) with four blank measures each?

Derrek, at this point, I do not know what a system break or and override is.

Many thanks,
Lou

To add bars at the start of the flow, take a look at the Insert Bars section of the Bars and Barlines panel on the right-hand side in Write mode. There you can choose Start of flow, then set 8 in the spin box below, then click Insert Bars.

To add a system break after four bars, switch to Engrave mode, select the bar rest in bar 5, then click System Break in the left-hand panel.

Thank you, dspreadbury.

I am making progress. I have two additional questions I would like to pose to the group, please:

  • A google search turned up the term Simile for a percent-sign-looking measure repeat, but that word, entered into Dorico’s search engine returns no results. What is it called in Dorico, please?

  • In the screen shot below, the first two measures are the beginnings of my intro. It will be repeated with the sign I am asking about above. But I want the last diad to be tied to the beginning of the next measure, which will not show the notes. Can someone point me toward a solution for this?
    Many thanks,

Lou

These are called bar repeats in Dorico (and in English generally). Simile is used to indicate continuing to play in the same manner as previously marked, without the markings.

To do this intro: Select the 6 empty bar rests, ⇧R, and enter %2.

This creates a 2-bar repeat region for the whole selected passage.

Thank you, Mark - much appreciated!
