Adding midi sustain to audio track

In this project I had a piano improv that I did decades ago that I liked, but it was on an out-of tune piano. I went through, measure by measure and copied what I could determine to 2 midi channels for right and left hand. I played back and used a sustain pedal to record on another track set to the same out, so it would affect them.

So now I am wondering about the best way to proceed to make audio tracks from the audio of the midis. I haven’t been using the intermediate step of 1st copying to an external instrument track. I usually create an audio track and then play a midi track with its out set to the in of the audio. But in either method what would be the best way to include the sustain? And on both tracks or just one?

Hi,

The easiest way is to route both MIDI Tracks to the same MIDI Channel. Then you can set the Sustain Pedal on one of the tracks only.

That is the way I was using it. So if I don’t use an external track intermediate, I would just have both sustain and 1 piano track going to record an audio track?
What would be the procedure if I went with the external track intermediary as most now do? For the piano I’d create the external and drag the piano to it. would I do the same for the sustain? But then rendering the piano wouldn’t have the sustain.

Hi,

Sorry, I don’t know, what do you mean by the external track.

In general, to the audio track, you will get exactly the same what you hear while playback.

You can just add an Audio track, set its Input (where is your hardware synth connected to your Audio Device), Enable Record on the Audio track and hit Record.

I meant external instrument track, set up as the way it seems most people proceed now. Presonus Studio 1 doesn’t even use midi tracks, just external instrument tracks. So I am trying to explore benefits.

Hi,

The benefit is, you don’t have to have 2 tracks (MIDI and Audio). But it’s much more dificult, if you want to use multi-timbral on your hardware. In this case, it’s better to use MIDI and Audio tracks.
