Adjust bar line position

I’m probably having a “change from Finale” terminology issue, but I want to move some barlines around (purely visually–no change in music content):

Between measure 1 and 2, I want to move the bar line so that it aligns with the space between the words “your” and “name”. And then between measures 4 and 5, I want to move the bar line between “your” and “love”.

When I go into Engrave, I get handles on the bar lines, but I can’t find a way to drag them to the right (in this case–it potentially could be that I want to drag left in another).

And at the risk of confusing the thread, is there a way to align (in measure 1) the “not” on the second line (it’s in lyric line 2) with the “Not” on the first line?

Thanks much!

Are you maybe trying with the mouse instead of Alt+Arrows (or Shift+Alt+Arrows, or Ctrl+Alt+Arrows, or Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Arrows — each one making a different gap)?

If you choose to show verse numbers (under Engraving Options > Lyrics), then you can select the second line, and in the Properties Panel, switch on Show Verse Number and leave the box blanck. Then the first words of the two lines will be aligned.

Arrows don’t do anything, and mouse doesn’t do anything. I did a Alt-click selection on the bars, and a mouse drag selection. Is there some different way of selecting? That would work fine (and does, thanks, I learned something) in “normal” lyric setting. But this is Anglican Chant, so it’s six pages of one lyric, where for ease of reading, I’m using a second lyric line to fit more text in.

In Engrave mode, be sure you’ve selected the Note Spacing icon in the left panel. (Only available in Pro version). Then select the box above the measure and use the alt key with the arrow keys. Mouse dragging doesn’t work in engrave mode for this.

Instead of putting the second line in verse 2, when done entering verse 1, you could use the translation line (alt-down arrow while in the lyrics popover). In the properties panel you can change the paragraph style to match the regular lyrics. Doing it this way, the lyrics will align.

You might also want to experiment in the properties panel with the various lyrics option regarding alignment.

Thanks!

I’m sure I did the alt-arrow (option-arrow on Mac), but must not have.

A few weeks ago I wrote a lot of those chants. The red squares have been manually moved.

You can even press the CTRL/CMD key along with OPTION/ALT for larger steps

As @JAMES_GILBERT points out above, you need to be in the Note Spacing submode of Engrave mode. There, you can select the square handles and move them using the various Alt+Arrow key combinations I mentioned.
