Advice needed for surround sound mixing.

I am venturing into surround mixes of my music for some projects.

Right now I have a MOTU traveler feeding just a stereo pair of monitors. I just ordered a couple more and was thinking of setting them as a 4.1 system, with just 2 front/rear L&R. In Cubase this should be easy to add to set up the additional pair.

My question is about creating a mixdown file that can be played on a PC, say WinAmp or FooBar.

Can I mixdown to WAV? How do music apps handle multitrack audio files?

Also can I just leave the sub doing its normal duties without the LFE channel?

Thanks in advance!

Ha …I think that would have been called quadraphonic once upon a time!

Foobar can play multi channel wav.

Also can I just leave the sub doing its normal duties without the LFE channel?

Are you feeding the satellites from outs on the sub? Does it have 4 channels?

Ha, I figured it was that but don’t think I need the center channel, that is more for dialog in movies, from what I have read.

I do have 2 subs, but will probably just feed the front L&R from them, I actually like to keep the sub in the room near the listener (behind the couch/seating etc).

So obviously if you use one sub with the fronts and the rear are direct from the interface you will get low end level change as you pan between front and rear…but if you keep most of the low end centered it should be fine.
