After not using Cubase for a while, plugins often crash now!

Hi,
Windows 11 Pro 64bit, Cubase 12 Pro, Intel i7 7820X, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD blah, blah.

I haven’t done any projects in awhile. I started working on a new song idea using an older VST soft synth, (Applied Acoustics Systems, Ultra Analog VA-2) I insterted it on a track, it seems to work as usual with my MIDI controller, but when I go back to it to open it and choose another patch, it crashes. The song keeps playing and I can open other track inserts in the mixer, but the affected plugin won’t close and no longer responds. Newer, higher quality plugins like Izotope Pro-Q3 did the same thing today when trying to open it after it was already inserted on a track. It opens, immediately freezes and I cannot edit/adjust it. I can still drag it around the screen, but it’s not actually active.
The Mixer seems to act weird as well, not letting me remove the frozen plugin from the track. The drop down menu will not open so I can choose “no effect” to remove the dead plugin, and looks kinda grayed out, I also cannot click the blue/yellow dot that disables the inserts. Then after a few minutes, it will let me remove it from the track using the delete button on the keyboard.
Everything else seems to continue working, but it’s pointless not being able to access the plugins.

Is my Cubase corrupted?
Suggestions?
Thanks!

Hello
Check below steps

  1. Update your VST plugins and Cubase to the latest versions.
  2. Check compatibility of plugins with Cubase 12 Pro and Windows 11.
  3. Reset plugin settings and Cubase preferences.
  4. Ensure graphics drivers are up to date.
  5. Test the plugins in a new project.
  6. Contact Steinberg support if issues persist.

Hope it will help you

Hi @BassRocket

Sorry about your crashes. As rightly pointed out by @stevediaz you should first make sure everything is up-to-date.

If the problem persists please attach corresponding DMP files (Documents/Steinberg/crashdumps) here or in PM so that we can investigate.

Cheers,
Armand

Hello and thank you all for your replies!
I found the problem and feel silly now…
It was simply the “Constrain Delay Compensation” button!
The little icon with the clock, in the furthest lower left hand corner of the screen.
I remember thinking it might be a good idea to have that selected, only because it sounded like it might improve latency (but I actually had no idea what the button did!).

It definitely was the culprit and stopped the Mixer from working right!
It all works great now, as usual. I’ve never really had a lot of problems with Cubase…

I did update all the plugins I could think of, including the graphics driver and ended up getting a couple newer versions of Fabfilter’s Q3 equalizer and the C2 compressor for free! (did you guys know you could get “some” Fabfilter updates for free? Unlike Waves that charges an arm and a leg for updates after a year…)

Thanks again for your quick replies! Rock on!
