Align groups of bar numbers (not full system)

Is there any way, like Align Dynamics, to select a group of Bar Numbers and force them into vertical alignment?

I’m looking at a situation where ledger lines and the like have pushed a phrase’s worth of bar numbers out of the way (from collision avoidance). The result is a staggered, variable height, as the numbers get pushed different distances by different notes. I don’t want to drag all of the bar numbers from outside the phrase by turning the system-wide alignment on, I just want to grab 4 bar numbers and get them in a clean row. This happens often, but I see no way to do this but select each one individually, and nudge them manually until they visually appear aligned. I’m not seeing any measurement ruler that shows the object positions to even mathematically guarantee that I’ve lined them up correctly manually.

Hi @Composerbell,

the only way I see would be to deactivate Avoid collision in Layout Options>Bar Numbers, then set an appropriate Minimum distance from staff that covers most of the normal distanced ones, then you can select the ones where you have the described issue, and can set the desired offsets in the Properties Panel or drag them to the desired position, but the panel tells you the precise amount: since collision avoidance is deactivated, the offsets will be absolute for those bar numbers, so that they will remain aligned.

Can you share an excerpt Dorico file that shows how your score looks like in that passage? (To experiment)

Demo of bar number placement - 08_Horn in F - Demo.dorico (1.5 MB)

Here’s an example. Ideally m28-31 would all be vertically aligned. I understand that the system seeing nothing in m29 to push the bar number down, but it looks janky having it suddenly kick up relative to the other numbers. Even m30 and 31 look crooked, even though the hairpin and the “pp” marking look roughly the same vertical position.

M42-50 look decent, with m42-44 sitting “as a group” vertically aligned, while m45-46 as a separate group also vertically aligned.

Then on the last system, m51-53 look aligned (default distance), but m55 is slightly lower, and m56 is slightly lower again. Those three would also look better aligned.

I guess, ideally, what I’d like to see is something like Dynamic Grouping applied to Bar Numbers as well, so we could set groups of bar numbers that lock into vertical alignment and then let Collision Avoidance move the group as needed. That would keep things looking clean, instead of crooked like currently, while not forcing the entire system to get pulled away from the staff. In this example, if full System alignment is turned on, m42-44 and m51-53 both look wrong, because the bar numbers there end up very far from the staff due to being aligned with the bars that are reasonably pushed down by low notes + dynamic markings.

At this point, it seems like the most reliable way is to set the minimum distance close, Align across the system ON, and let the Collision Avoidance push the whole system’s bar numbers down as needed, for the whole system. And then manually select those which could go up and move them as a group. That way, everything always starts aligned, so moving a group results in that set of numbers still being aligned with each other.

Though, I think you have to individually click each bar number in Engrave to do this, right? A drag-select would really help with this process too, to “lasso” groups of bar numbers and push them up again when the system alignment pushes them too far down.

You can Marquee select a passage in Engrave mode, then switch to Write mode, right click and choose Filter>Time signatures (bar numbers are generated by TS and are conceptually the same in Dorico), the switch to Engrave mode again to position them as desired.

For the spacings, experiment with the values (following my suggestions or mixing it with your suggestions) and see if you obtain something acceptable for you.

I would say that for this layout, putting the bar numbers above the staff would solve your issue almost completely (with some tweaks of Engraving Options Multi-bar rests number position, but yes this would be global, and just moving the bar range numbers in Engrave mode to the same height of the other bar numbers):

With this specific layout, bar numbers above 100% solves the problem. But I have to contend with developing a system that works more universally (full orchestra parts, this is just an example part pulled from a full orchestration), and working with a client who is committed to bar numbers being below and centered.

Are you suggesting that I could select a swath of material, filter->Time Signatures, then switch to Engrave Mode to push them around? And then just jump between Write and Engrave to manage selecting various groups of bar numbers? That’s a bit complicated, but I guess if I have the part loaded up in two tabs, one in each mode, it should be relatively fast.

Or even faster if you use shortcuts: Command(Control)+2 for Write mode and Command(Control)+3 for Engrave mode. (And to make the marquee selection you need to start from Engrave mode in this case):

But actually in your case you can make all in Engrave mode, as the aligned bar numbers are relatively free, if you position them a chunk at a time:

While I’d love something a bit more automatic, the use of filter>bar numbers does seem to make this much smoother. So, I think the workflow for this situation is essentially to set the spacing so it aligns for the width of the system (so the numbers are aligned), with collision avoidance on (so they automatically move out of the way of material), and just selectively filter and move bar numbers back up if they slip too far away.

The reverse could also work (turn off collision avoidance so they’re always tucked in, and then use the filter to select and then move problematic bars as needed), but that carries more risk of missing a bar number, or leaving many numbers too tight to the music, because the work inertia favors collisions or near-collisions.

Thank you!

A quicker way to select bar numbers is to make a normal selection of music, then in Engrave mode, use the jump bar (or assign a key command) to use the Select Bar Numbers command. This will leave only the bar numbers in the range selected.

Nice @dspreadbury!!
I see that the command also works in Write mode. And it works also just selecting the first note or rest in the first desired bar, and any note/rest in the last desired bar: the Select Bar Numbers command will select all bar numbers in between (but of course to change the position you need to switch to Engrave mode, or just do the two items selection directly in Engrave mode)

So this still involves selecting the music in Write mode, correct? It seems like “filter for bar numbers” and “select bar numbers” is roughly the same number of steps (especially if assigned a key command), just doing the selection in write mode (via filter) versus in Engrave mode (via jump-select)?

It is nice to have the options though!

Not necessarily: you can do the selection

  • in Write mode (selecting the two items as I explained, or using the Marquee selection, or using the System Track, or clicking on the bar/s with or without modifiers to add/subtract bars, or the other methods available in Write mode

or

  • in Engrave mode (selecting the two items as I explained, or using the marquee selection)

Once you did the selection of the music in any of those ways, you can apply the command (Select bar numbers) suggested by Daniel, which works in either Write or Engrave mode, to select only the bar numbers.

To move the now selected bar numbers graphically you need to be in Engrave mode.

I didn’t count the steps, but:
in Write mode, unless you do Select All, the bar numbers are not being selected, and that’s why you cannot filter them, so the filter is not the fastest way, as Daniel suggested. My first suggestion needed several switches between Engrave/Write/Engrave.
The command Select Bar Numbers, instead works better (in either Write or Engrave mode), after you did the selection of the music.

Please try meticulously all the methods suggested (all combinations of them!) and see what works best for you.
