Allow file-only syncing between programs on different systems

I know this would be a bit of a can of worms, when it comes to cross-platform compatibility but I am frequently finding myself going between systems, namely because I have different equipment on different setups, e.g., for recording and mixing but one thing never changes, that is Audio files.

In this day and age, I would want to be able to assume that I could simply use some kind of intermediary, to be able to syncrhronise files, while not having to resort to the Sneaker net, as we have since, it must be; when floppy discs arrived and now the only difference is, it is a thumb drive or whatever portable storage so please SB, rather than make me wonder as to whether I should set up a file server and whether that would actually work (I could ask a question), how about having some way of checking files on instancing of a project.

Cheers

If you can afford it, you can set up a Fibre Channel NAS storage system. I see studios using them often, usually with Pro Tools in different rooms, but accessing the same audio and video media stored in their NAS storage server.

As to “cross-platform” compatibility, what are we talking about here? PC / Windows? Different DAWs?

As to media files coming from outside your studio environment, well, you can give clients a space on your server, and import their files to your main DAW session space. Not as easy, but doable. If they come in with floppy discs, thumb drives, magnetic tape, whatnot, well, that is not in the scope of this question anymore…

You absolutely will need AT LEAST a 1GBit network throughout, and likely you will end up wanting a 10GBit network, in order to be able to playback multitrack from the media server, and not have to copy your audio to a local drive.

The good thing about Nuendo is that the session files are Windows and Mac compatible, aka “cross-compatible.” So you could theoretically use two different operating system computers on the same session on the media server. That said, it is always best practice to always install IDENTICAL systems, including plugins, converters, et al, in order to minimize down time and troubleshooting.

Maybe someone on here is already using a media server, I hope they chime in.

One example, there are many other out there. Avid has a system as well:
