Allowing mismatch of # of fermatas per bar

I am creating an orchestral score where I would like 2 fermatas within a given bar for the melody line (i.e. on 2 different notes) and 1 fermata each for the remaining staves within the same bar (each accompanying part is simple, having either a single sustained note followed by a rest, or a full rest). The bar is in open meter, so the melody runs for a number of beats.

How to do this? Dorico seems to require 2 fermatas for those accompanying bars with a single note and then a rest.

For your melody line, you can create a playing technique that contains the fermata glyph and apply it as needed. It won’t play back correctly, but if that’s important you can fake it with hidden metronome marks.

Can you elaborate? Not quite clear. I’m less concerned with playback, and more on simple methods to enter non-uniform # of fermatas, for different instruments in the same measure.

  1. Go to Library > Playing Techniques
  2. Click the New (+) button in the lower left
  3. Name your technique Fermata; this should automatically put fermata in the Popover Text field
  4. Change the Type to Glyph
  5. Click the pencil icon under the preview window
  6. Click the trash can to remove the text object that’s there
  7. On the right side, in the Range dropdown, select Holds and Pauses
  8. Select the fermata character, which should be in the upper left, and then click the Add Glyph button in the lower right
  9. Click OK, and then OK

Now you can add this playing technique to any note. Select a note, open the Playing Technique popover with Shift+P, type fermata, and hit Enter.
