In N14 I had to press Alt+Tab two times to switch TO nuendo window - in N15 it is fixed - I press one time to switch TO Nuendo window and TWO times to switch back to the previous app!!! Are you joking??? You driving me crazy! There are a lot of complex apps with multiple windows and only Nuendo behaves this way.
That is a Windows function, nothing related to Nuendo. It switches through the list of open windows.
Not true, as the OP said there are plenty of other apps using multi-windowed views that deal with alt-tabbing far more consistently and sensibly than Nuendo does.
True dat. Cubendo on Windows is still a pain in the behind when it comes to manual task switching.
It would be nice if all Cubendo windows and tasks could be seen as one item. If you switch to another task all of Cubendo goes to the background (that is currently the case), if you switch back to Cubendo all its windows come back to the foreground (that is not happening in all cases).
It is not Windows function - it’s Nuendo malfunction.
That is the default behavior under Windows.
That isn’t switching the tasks, it is switching open windows. If you have two windows open from one application that are not modal windows, it switches between these two windows. It always switches between all open windows.
And I remember a discussion some time ago, where some users argued very hard to have exactly this. Mixers, editors, and project should be separated threads. The reason was ALT+TAB switching and multi monitor setups.
Once again - there are A LOT OF multi windowed apps that alt+tabbing as it should and only Nuendo does it differently. Hard to understand why you are defending this weird behaviour. Maybe you have an explanation why it is changing from version to version?
Because I was part of the initial discussion that led to the current situation.
Examples?
All browsers, office apps and common communication apps behave exactly like Nuendo. It is the standard under Windows since Windows 1.0.
There are apps around that do their own window management, but these are just a few. And I do know only one, Wavelab.
But it didn’t changed in the last few versions. Only some windows became separated tasks, while they were nested windows before. That made it impossible to build a multi monitor setup and recall it exactly it was on close.
What are you talking about??? you press ALT+TAB ONCE to switch to other app and ONCE to switch back. What default behaviour you are talking about?
That is the default behavior I’m talking about.
Ok. But Nuendo doesn’t behave this way. You have to press TWO times alt+tab to get back from Nunedo to previous app. Nuendo has a total mess of switching between the windows since version 7.
Again, it doesn’t behave like you describing in my case.
Perhaps you are not working with video. If your video window is not fullscreen you have to press two times. I want consistent behaviour from the app. I don’t want to guess how many times I have to press to switch to other app. In versions before 7 there was ctrl+tab to switch between the windows in the app. Now ctrl+tab also works and alt+tab switches chaotically between the windows. For more then 10 years steinberg can’t marry alt+tab in windows and nuendo.
You are right of course.
The Alt-tab keystroke combination in Windows is intercepted and handled by the operating system, and so an application never even sees this key combo. It’s basically designed to cycle forward and back again through all top level windows of all running applications. There isn’t really anyway to change this behaviour as it’s been this way since the beginning and thus changing it just wouldn’t be wise.
How, might this be possible?
Now I will say something that I haven’t said so far: it works in Reaper.
I haven’t gone through all the windows there but “always on top” items work within the main task.
As long as Steinberg are on a quest for consistency, I will always give them the benefit of the doubt, but this situation may only exist due to the legacy program windows, in the DAW’s.
You never mentioned the video window before.
The software behaves as it should, and the overlay (video window) is part of the task list if Nuendo is in foreground.
Is that really such a big issue as you try to construct?
I doubt that.
It would be a feature request and not a rant like the first post.
Always on top is working in Nuendo as well.
The video player window is an overlay, not a real program window.
Hi @emotive
sadly, this seems no longer true for certain aspects of the main program interface in Cubase 15 (apart from quite a few improvements at the same time). Especially the “new” (aka “toy-i-fied”) UI color management (sentence removed by user), and that’s just one example where things apparently don’t match the ideal of keeping things consistent throughout a whole program’s user interface and known feature history, here of course in terms of (ideally intuitive) functionality and customization options, which very often aren’t just aesthetic options but perceptive guides.
(just as a sidenote, one erroneous assumption edited out)
Apart from that, I’ve never had any serious problems with Windows’ ALT+TAB task switching logic, and I do use it all the time.
Cheers,
Markus
