An 8 core cpu at 3.6ghz for $499? And “beats” the $1100 i7 6900K in benchmarks? What’s the catch? Is AMD now a viable option for DAW builds?

One catch is that it is limited to 64GB of RAM in a dual channel config instead of Intel’s quad channel config.

Even if an AMD CPU is finally up to the mark, it will take a while for the platform (motherboard, chipset etc.) to mature sufficiently to be trusted for DAW work.
