An idea inside Opera voice part

As I continue to explore Dorico and work on my scores, here’s another idea:

Adding a tick box in a vocal part (edit instrument) to remove all beams. It would indeed be much quicker to add a beam to a few vocalises here and there, rather than having to go through the entire score to remove them (I am thinking about Opera vocal part of XVIIIe and XIXe centuries).

Of course, the ideal solution would be an option for Dorico to recognise from the lyrics whether a passage is a vocalise or not, and in that case to keep the beams, but remove them from syllabic lyrics (so, the tick box would be “remove beams on syllabic notes” ; but then again, we’ve got to have a bit of work to do, haven’t we? :innocent:

A function to beam to syllables has certainly been asked and acknowledged.

You can unbeam all notes pretty easily, with the “Make Unbeamed” menu item in the Beaming submenu, if you want to copy the old-fashioned style… :face_with_tongue:

I don’t think an automation at that point makes sense, as there are different conventions how to beam lyrics.
Btw. Select the first note of your singer, Extend the selection to the end of the flow and Make Unbeamed.

Are you really enter the lyrics on the beamed notes?
I noticed when I adjust the beams while copying the music – which is pretty quick with a keyboard shortcut – I can save a bunch of time to paste the lyrics afterwards because it’s a bit clearer to identify the melismatic parts.

No. I unbeam first.
About the “old fashion” said by @benwiggy , That reminds me of a funny story:

There was a madman who, whilst walking round the courtyard of his asylum, suddenly approached the perimeter wall; he climbed up to near the top and saw lots of people walking about and moving about freely. So he called out to a passer-by and asked: “Psst, psst, are there many of you in there?”
