An issue with printing some characters to Adobe Acrobat and local printers

A couple of months ago I found an issue with my printing pedal marks to Adobe Acrobat. Recently I’ve found that tuplet numbers also don’t print properly. I also found that printing to any of my local printers (and also to Microsoft Print to PDF) gives the same errors.

This only occurred when I upgraded to 6.2. 6.1 and 5.x do not show this issue.

I’ve attached a small project and a PDF from my Brother printer to illustrate this issue. This only occurs with Bravura, all other music fonts work OK.

I then recognised that this may be local to my setup, and this was confirmed when I posted in the Dorico group on FB and some people were kind enough to confirm that my project file printed correctly on their system.

I am running on a Dell laptop with 40 gBytes RAM, Windows 11 and the latest version of Dorico.

It’s not a critical issue for me since I have a workaround and I’m not keen to do a complete reinstall from scratch, but I’m wondering whether someone in techoland may be able to help.

My thanks to Lillie for suggesting I post in this forum.

Regards
Chris

For starters, don’t use that: use Dorico’s built-in graphics export in Print mode for creating PDFs.

Your PDF doesn’t display correctly on my computer. (And, I’m guessing, everyone’s.)

The fonts are not correctly embedded in the PDF.

Bravura works perfectly well for most people, so I would check whether you perhaps have two copies of Bravura installed and enabled (e.g. switched on in the OS). Or perhaps they are all disabled for use by the OS!

Your Dorico document works for me.

That’s almost certainly unnecessary. You’d be deleting everything, then putting almost everything back, in the hope that something missing or mis-configured is restored.

Thank you for your reply. I can only find one version of bravura (otf and json), version 1.455.

I’ve gone to the latest version of Dorico, with the same results. As expected, I can print the characters using MS Word without any issues, so my copy of bravura is OK.

Clearing the Windows font cache makes no difference.

I still am at a loss to understand why 5.x and 6.1 printed OK but 6.2 didn’t. 6.2 is doing something different in my setup but I have no idea why. Everyone else is fine

Any more ideas?

I also have an old Dell 15R which gave the same problem. It turns out that on this machine 6.0 prints ok, but 6.1 and 6.2 don’t. I only discovered the problem using 6.2, so I suspect 6.1 would not print on that either. Weird…

What happens if you use a different music font, like Sebastian or Finale Maestro?

The problem only occurs with Bravura, all the other fonts I have work fine. Also, a respondent to my query on the FB page got exactly the same error (I.e. his printout was the same as mine) so it’s not just my setup - this error is potentially widespread.

I know now that the error started with 6.1, not 6.2 as I originally thought - I just didn’t print those characters. 5 and 6.0 print ok, and it appears to occur with any printer on the system.

I think this needs to be looked at fairly quickly
