An old MIDI keyboard and slider problems

Sure. Let’s take a VST example, say Retrologue.

If we open it, we can see:

Now, on the top right corner we see a button named QC. Let’s click it:

On the top frame we now see 8 parameters (Filter Cutoff, Filter Resonance etc). These are our Quick Controls. These quick controls can be directly accessed by a special setup in file Studio→Studio Setup→VST Quick Controls

Here, we can actually MIDI Learn our keyboard’s faders, by first checking the box Learn. When we select any of these Quick Controls, we can move the fader we want, and it will be MIDI learnt. This means that from now on, whenever we want to control any of the 8 parameters in our QC frame above, we can use these faders.

At the same time, when we don’t like one or more of these parameters, we can actually change them, in the VST window.

Say that I want my first QC in Retrologue to be assigned to “Delay Mix” instead of the default “Filter Cutoff”.

We go to our Retrologue’s window, and we click on the big “L” button at the left side of the Quick Controls:

Now, we can select the very first parameter as I have already done in the screenshot above.
Next, we find the parameter we want (Delay Mix):

If we now move this parameter a but, it will be set to our quick control 1 slot, where initially we had the filter cutoff:

From now on, whenever we use our Fader 1, the delay mix level will be altered.

I know it may sound a but complicated, but once you get into it, it is not more difficult than direct midi learning of parameters.

Now, returning to my third screenshot, you’ll see a notice, that this “VST Quick Controls” functionality will be removed and we should use the MIDI Remote Instead. That’s true, though I don’t know the time horizon behind this, but still we can actually easily build a MIDI Remote instead of using the VST Quick Controls setup, without a problem.
