I usually don’t like to complain about Nuendo/Cubase, because I love working with Steinberg products (and I have them all), but there is something that is bugging me and causing me to have to use Reaper or Pro Tools to do these tasks. I wonder if I’m overlooking something, or if anyone else thinks this is a problem in their workflow.
Mixdown settings: not being project-related but program-related
Some projects need to be bounced Mono, some Stereo, I always need to go back to the original file to remember if the file was Mono or Stereo.
I do work for theme-parks, we always have to make changes, and I never remember how I bounced the mix.
I know you can make presets but you can’t make a preset for every file you bounce.
Timeline and Workspace: I know Workspace can remember if your project is in Bars/Beats or Timecode on the ruler and other displays but you can’t link a Workspace to a project, even if it has a Project’s workspace available, it doesn’t call it when you open the project, you have to manually go and re-call the Workspace. Why aren’t the Workspaces project-related?
So if you go from a musical project to a time-linear project, you have to do that manually.
I agree it would be helpful to have the last used Export / Audio mixdown settings saved as part of the project, or at least have an option to do so. In the meantime, one way to remember is to use the notepad but, of course, this is far from ideal.
In my opinion, regardless of workspaces, when you open a project it might be better if it opened in exactly the same state (in all aspects including the timeline and zoom settings) as when you last saved it. Sadly, currently this is not the case.
I mentioned the same lack of Bars/Beats Timecode settings being “locked” to the project when I started using Nuendo 3 years ago. As a person who does both post and music (and whose projects switch between the two modes), I’ve always found it irritating that I have to constantly change it manually.
I was taken to task for suggesting it back then. I’m glad others find it as bothersome as I still do. This and Nuendo’s inability to spot an AAF to a location of my choosing during import are some of the few reasons I stay with Pro Tools. I think of them as small quality of life features that speed up my workflow.
Even the practically free Ardour V9 ( 1$ per month ) has solid ripple editing. They have gone as far as having different ripple modes,… one for editing again video, and one for editing multitrack interview/voice content.
I just dont understand why SB can only see as far as the “Tape” notion of “Cut Time”.
My usual comment then, that Every NLE video editor application HAS TO handle Ripple Editing , leading to the situation where many people edit audio-only content in an NLE, which is inconvenient for many other reasons.
The lack of Ripple Editing is, a curious one for me, quite.
I did some research on that, it appears to be at its’ most basic a way for audio to be stretched or contracted, depending on what is happening with respect to the timeline, so audio is adjusted to compensate for changes in the length of time at any given point in a linear project.
I can’t imagine that Steinberg would not be working on this in the background, even if it would take many years, since I am certain they would be wanting to use their own algorithm in this case.
The last news from Steinberg regarding ripple edit was that they would like to add it but it is not easy to integrate into the existing code. It seems this feature would require some changes or additions deep in the program.
