Any way to compose freely metered music (aleatoric) with playback?

Hey! I want to compose some freely metered music, but it’s really difficult in Dorico. I’ve been trying to do it, but I’m running into issues such the need to compose with note values. Is there any easy way to do this, or setup a system to do it, so I can compose this kind of music in real time (instead of placing one note, clicking a thousand buttons etc.), whilst being able to hear it with playback.

Not that I think it matters but I have NotePerformer.

I know this is all easier to do in hand, so the real idea is to make the playback work and the working flow way, way easier.

Thanks in advance!

Some more examples

I’m running into issues especially when trying to do polyphonic stuff.

For your second example, you should be able to get proper playback relatively easily.

For the first one, you’re best off creating another hidden stave/instrument with the playback simulation and write out all the notes there. Some of it is possible by hiding notes but it may mess with your spacing too much.

Daniel has hinted that they’ll have a nicer solution for this kind of stuff in the future. For now, you can do it, but it is a lot of work, especially to hear it correctly (and these types of things are often a lot of work in other notation programs too).

Thanks. Did he say anything about when this alleged feature is live?

No, but we are only probably months away from Dorico 6. New versions seem to be coming out around 1.5-2 years apart, and Dorico 5 was released in May 2023.

If the problem is the A flat being a quaver out from the … F flat, then my first thought is that you’ve left Insert mode on.
