Hi All
I am trying to create a playback template that allows me to switch between the various orchestral libraries I own.
However, when I apply the playback template I get duplicate VST instruments in the Play tab.
Does onyone have any insight into what I might be doing wrong?
James
Can you explain exactly what you’re doing here? The point of playback templates is that each one lets you switch to a given library (or combinations thereof).
These duplicates: are they e.g. 2 BBCSO plug-ins for Bassoons, when you’ve only got 1 Bassoon Player; or 1 BBCSO and 1 HALion?
Thanks for replying
I start by creating a project that works as I would like it to:
- Set up expression maps;
- Set up VST instruments. In my case this means 4 VST instruments (each with over 16 seperate instruments and expression maps in them)
a. Spitfire Symphonic Winds
b. Spitfire Symphonic Brass
c. Spitfire Symphonic Percussion
d. Spitfire Symphonic Strings.
- For each VST instrument I save an endpoint configuration (from the VST Instruments specific endpoint configuration)
- For the entire set of VST instruments I save an endpoint configuration.
- from the “Play|Playback Template …” Menu item I create a new playback template and export it.
**** NOTE**** When saving the playback template I am uncertain whether I shoud use the items created in step 3 or the single item I created in step 4.
- I export that template
- I open up an existing project and head over to “Play|Playback Template …”
- I import the recently exported template
- I get duplicate VST instruments!

Ah. Yes. Getting Dorico to assign a “job lot” of instruments together in one VST plug-in is difficult. In fact I don’t know whether it’s possible in a template.
Each Player/instrument is dealt with in turn, and usually assigned its own VST. It doesn’t look at existing VSTs to see if any slots with patches are currently ‘unused’.
So, you’ll see that Violin 1 uses VST 1, slot 1; and Violin 2 uses slot 2 on a new VST, etc, etc.
Thanks for your quick response again.
Actually the instruments are mostly assigned to the one VST instrument (ie, one of the group with the same name) with the remainder either not used or with just one instrument assigned.
Further, it’s not possible to remove an unused VST instrument unless it is the bottom one in the list.
I should also say that each VST Instrument is an instance of VEPro.
You know, I bet it’s related to the fact that I have Enabled Independent Voice Playback on a few voices (I use this feature for divisi strings and a2 winds and brass).
I might try and remove that feature then resave the endpoints
Nope
But now I wonder if it’s got something to do with the fact that not all the same instruments exist in the project when the template is applied.
Some weird bug.

Yes, if you’re creating new Players/Instruments in Setup mode after applying the template, you’ll get new VSTs for each one.
