Thus far Dorico has never played pizz articulations in my scores. It’s not the end of the world but it sure would be nice to hear those when listening back, if only to not annoy me so much. What do I have to do to get it to play back the pizz markings and switch back to Arco. I’m using the playing techniques tool to enter both pizz and Arco.
What sound set(s) are you using. Some do not have pizz sounds or lack the Expression Map to switch them.
Can you post a sample score that illustrates the problem?
I don’t know what a sound set is. In the playback template menu it says I’m using “HAlion Sonic Selection, Olympus, GASE”. The other options are “HAlion Sonic Selection” and “Silence.” I’ve never messed with these playback templates before. I don’t know how this part of Dorico works and I don’ want to watch a hour long video to figure out how to hear pizz sounds.
So you are using Dorico SE?
The Sonic Selection sound library uses General Midi patches and does not include pizz. articulation.
I’m using Dorico 5. I paid a lot of money for it. How do I get pizz sounds?
Then, most likely, you have not installed the sound sets. Else you would have more options for playback templates (specifically those including HSO and Iconica Sketch)
ok. How do I install the sound sets?
What is HSO?
NEvermind. I think I found it on the Steinberg site.
Nothing is ever simple with this program. Every little questions involves some rabbithole that eats away at my composing time.
Use the Steinberg Download Assistant.
Open the My Products section and select Dorico Pro 5…
Install the Iconica Sketch and Halion Symphony Orchestra…
Most people install these alongside the initial Dorico install. I wonder why you did not?
Who knows? I can’t remember. Maybe because I have tons of gigs of sample libraries on my hard drives and I didn’t want more. I appreciate your help on this but now my “download manager” app says it can’t connect to the Steinberg server…. so now I have all sorts of more confusing problems to deal with and all I wanted to was to hear a little pizz now and then…. what a pain.
So why not use those for your playback? (There are Expression Maps available for most of the mainstream libraries - and plenty of people here to help you set them up)
I have no idea how to do this. I don’t even know what an expression map is. I have no idea where to start.
Hi @callmecooney, possibly you have an old Steinberg Download Assistant app installation. There were many warnings and suggestions (in the Forum and in the emails from Steinberg) to install the new version, because the old one was not able anymore to connect to the servers.
You can install it from here:

Dorico Playback Templates video series, by Dorico’s Anthony Hughes.
I appreciate everyone’s input here. I’m sorry if I’m a bit slow to figure this all out…. but…. couldn’t anyone recommend the FASTEST way to just get pizz sounds in Dorico. I’ve now spent several hours chasing down different paths and I am no closer to getting what I want. I’ve downloaded HSO but don’t know how to make Dorico use it. I’m also downloading Iconica. I have EW libraries and Symphobia libraries I could also use. I just want the strings to play pizz and then Arco sounds when the score indicates this. I don’t really want to watch several hours of video with Anthony Hughes taking slowly and going on an on about all this stuff that I don’t care about. I just want to know how to get a pizz sound. I’ve tried tech support but they won’t answer the phone this morning even though the chat tech support told me to call in the morning.
Dorico tells me I don’t have a license for Iconica. Does that come with Dorico 5? I was ablate download it in the downloader?
I do seem now to be able to switch the VST for my strings to HSO sounds…. but what sounds do I choose to get pizz? I’m changing the sounds to Violin Combi and all I get is a quieter sounding violin that doesn’t seem to have any pizzz sounds. I’ve now listened to several Anthony Hughes videos and of course he doesn’t really address my questions. And the Tech support is not answering the phone.
Don’t know what type of music you make, but for “classical”, Noteperformer is the easiest way to go. Costs a little, though. They have a demo.

Ok my take away from all this is that Dorico can’t playback pizzicato strings sounds. Finale could do this without any setup issues. Dorico seems to be unable to handle this really basic function.
