I have a Bach transcription for 2 flutes and a double bass playing pizz.
Playback template is Halion Sonic.
There’s a compressor on the mixer output, and if I turn this off while playing, the bass plays arco instead of pizz. It reverts to pizz again if I stop and start playback again.
I’m fairly certain bypassing a condenser wouldn’t have any affect on which playing technique sounds, so there is probably another reason.
Does arco always coincide with the compressor or does it happen in the same place in the score (thinking hidden arco or something).
Seeing the project would probably be the best way for anyone to help, though.
Did you check the way you indicated pizzicato?
Although the articulation is directional i.e. you would need to cancel it with arco, you can for some reason also pull on a range marker to indicate a pizz range like you do e.g. for crescendo or pedal. There is no line above the notes however. At the end of the range it will generally switch to arco even if there is no marker.
If you just put pizz on the first note without pulling on the range marker (entering shift+p and pizz), it should stay pizz till an arco indication.
If that does not work you can of course also experiment with the range.
Here’s an excerpt of the file.
It doesn’t do it when using NP, so it’s probably a Dorico/Halion thing.

I can replicate it. Crazy. How in the world could by-passing a condenser on the main mix trigger a playing technique change? But just to be sure: You are using the Auto playback template, correct?
This definitely deserves steinberg’s attention.
It also happens if you bypass the reverb on the track.
yes.
