Arco won't arco

Hi there…I converted a file from finale xml to dorico

I am really have a problem with indicating arco but still hearing pizz

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks for your help

Re-apply your playback template first - I think that is the quickest most likely cure.

If the arco is proper music xml, then what’s happening is that Dorico doesn’t have all its ducks lined up to play it back yet. Finale obviously doesn’t provide Dorico with expression maps etc. but applying the template should fix that.

If that still doesn’t work, I would insert a real Dorico Arco - just to rule out if its an xml issue, and I’d switch playback to Halion if it wasn’t already just to rule out an instrument issue.

Also. Just to be on the same page, you are playing it back right? As opposed to note preview?

Select the arco and check in the status bar that it really is a playing technique…

I did try your suggestion, but I am not sure it was done correctly.

The exp map is solo violin.

But something is still not working with the arco indication.

Thanks for your help!

If you upload the file (or a cut down version of it). Someone will be able to help (beyond having to guess).

What sound set are you using? Some sets only include arco or pizz separately.

Thank you Janus!

I will do that tomorrow.

Best

Hi Derrek

The finale file probably used Garritan.

In Dorico it says the Halion for each instrument, so I guess it converted to it.

Thanks

I will send a file tomorrow

Hi Janus

775-violin-cut.dorico (2.5 MB)

Here is the file.

sometimes where the arco is signaled it does play arco, but then changes in the passage.

Thanks for your helpKen

It’s caused by the fact that Dorico doesn’t recognize arco as a cancellation of the alla chitarra playing technique you added in bar 4 (I’m not a string player so I’ll leave it to others to decide whether that makes sense or not).

To get the right playback you also have to add an ord. playing technique where the arco starts (which I got from this older topic). You can hide the ord. via the properties panel if you don’t want it to be visible.

Or would it be a solution to add Pizzicato alla chitarra in the Primary String mutual exclusion group in the Expression Map? It seems to work:

Alternatively, you could choose the “Pizzicato” playback technique for the alla chitarra playing technique.
