Is there a way to change the default numbering of note duration. Change from whole note “8” down to 1/64 th “2” Make whole note “1” half note “2” quarter note “3”, 1/8 the note “4” down to 1/64th “8”? I’m used to other software I have using the requested method. Started with Encore which died and is still rumoured to being revived by Don Williams using his Overture code (whole other story) , and had been really liking Finale and Sibelius, each for different reasons. But Finale has just advised us they will not be continuing, so I’m going to learn Dorico now.

Yes, you can remap these commands, using Edit > Preferences > Key Commands.
You’ll probably want to remove the existing shortcut keys and then assign your new ones. (If you try to map your new ones first, you’ll see conflicts with the existing ones.
The commands you’re looking for are in the Note Input > Set Note Duration section.
Not the answer you’re asking for, but FWIW, it took me maybe one week or so to get accustomed to Dorico’s note values (quarter=6. eighth=5 etc) after many years of Sibelius (quarter=5, eighth=4 etc.). This may not apply (or appeal) to you at all, but actually just diving in and never looking back worked great for me.
Same for me. Interesting, in Sibelius I used the [Num Pad area] of the keyboard for choosing the rhythmical values, and I still have the muscle memory for it.
I started Dorico with its different system, adopted to it in a few days, and since then use the [Number row] at the top of the keyboard, and it works perfectly for me.
