Not that I’m aware of, but maybe Finale has some advanced features I’m not familiar with. If I remember correctly, it does have a save to PDF function, so if there is some batching, maybe… (Within any application, I can also just print to a PDF995 print driver.)
Hmm, just doing a quick google on the subject, maybe this???
You’ll forgive me, but they couldn’t “give it away” to invested users at the fire-sale price of $99 for the last two years, which is why things are as they are.
Check if the external audio card is connected via usb hub. Ejl can be a problem when scanning devices and linking with Halion and Grzv Agent. I had this problem a few days ago.
Michael- I’ve been in Dorico 1.0 thru 5.1.51 and Finale from 1.0 thru 26.3.1. I don’t need to purchase Dorico again and there is no current way for me to purchase Finale 27 to get XML 4. If I recall correctly from your Recordaire days XML was a “dolet” downloadable from your site. How 'bout you build a dolet to make XML 4 available to those of us stuck in Finale 26? Hope you are enjoying well-deserved retirement!
MakeMusic bought Recordare in 2011 and still owns it as far as I know. They could build this if they want. At the moment, they are wanting $149.
Finale 26 can export MusicXML 3.1. Have you tried this? You might not need 4.0.
Batch conversion of Finale Files to MusicXML can be done in 25/26/27. Besides the Support doc below there are a number of YouTube videos on this. Exporting MusicXML Files from Finale
This also tells how to use the Dolet 7 plug-in to convert files made in Finale 2011–2014.5 and has a download link.
Earlier versions of the Dolet plug-in for Finale back to 2000 or earlier do exist but I cannot find download links anymore.
It sounds like the solution on the batch script would be a better way. FWIW, though PDF995 is just a printer driver. I tend to use it as my default printer in Windows as I rarely want to actually print on paper (and, when I do, I often print from the PDF in Acrobat Reader since I usually want the permanent PDF on my computer rather than just a one-time paper printout). However, I was thinking about this overnight, and it probably wouldn’t be a good solution for batch use in that it prompts for a file name each time you print.
Thanks Mikehalloran and others. I’ve updated numerous Finale 26 files to Dorico via XML as needed over the last few years. Each version of XML improves the translation. With multi-thousands of files to migrate to Dorico I am anxious to get the very best translations possible, and that requires Finale 27, which is only available to me by purchasing Dorico again in the cross-grade. Best I can tell at the moment, it is impossible to purchase only Finale 27 anywhere. I hope this changes.
My solution to this is buying the crossgrade with my Finale license on behalf of my Sibelius using friend. I get to keep the Finale 27 upgrade, he gets the Dorico discount I can’t claim because I bought it 8 years ago.
Why would it change? It’s not much more expensive than the v27 upgrade used to be.
As Mike mentioned, MakeMusic owns all the MusicXML code in Finale now. And yes, retirement has been great - this week is the first time I’ve been visiting notation forums in ages.
That won’t be necessary for most Mac users for a few years at least, perhaps longer. If one is on 27 now, that can be put off for a long time. Not only does 27 run over Sonoma on 2023 Macs like mine but we know that it runs over Sequoia which will ship on new models to be announced next month.
Since 2017 and High Sierra, the macOS has its own version of a VM called APFS Volumes. Unlike Partitions, they share empty drive space but like partitions, you can install an OS and boot from them. This is very easy and Apple has a ton of support documents on this. Add, delete, or erase APFS volumes in Disk Utility on Mac
I can create a Volume running Ventura for 26 if I want plus another for Sonoma (or Sequoia) for 27, If I still had an iMac Pro, I could have a Volume booting into High Sierra for Finale 2014.5 in addition to the others. There is no limit to the number of Volumes that can be created if one has the drive space.
The one limitation is that you can’t install a macOS older than the one that shipped when your machine was new. For example, 2017 is the model year for all iMac Pros no matter when they were actually built so it can have an APFS Volume booting into High Sierra to Sequoia while my early M2 2023 Studio can boot into Ventura (to run 26) or anything later into the foreseeable future. As long as the Finale License Server is up, were my Mac to die, I could purchase any used one capable of running Sonoma or Sequoia and I’m good — an M1 Mini or MacBook Air like my wife’s will work just fine.
I’ve been using the limited Finale version, Printmusic, for years to create scores for our small music group and has done verything I’ve needed. No complicated scores, but in the region of 1000 of them. I’m aware that Finale has an export complete folder option to automate creating MusicXML files, but sadly Printmusic has no such utility. I guess it’s down to converting them individually (unless I can find someone with the full version to do the folder conversion for me!!)
Welcome to the forum. I believe that MM will provide a copy of Finale 27 if you take the Dorico crossgrade offer. But you should check that on their site.
