Why does the Library manager not show you where the files actually are?
This is from a team member in fb group:
If you double-click on a Groove Agent content file it should open the Library Manager and either install or tell you that it already is. You then don’t need the files in the Download folder.
Does this make sense? Does it help?
It does - just click the details button
(Edit: if you want them somewhere else, just click the move button)
aru? (puzzled puppy face)
I hadn’t heard anything about any of this… but then, I don’t tend to follow news about software I don’t use.
would you mind giving a few details?
If you please, can we keep this thread focused on Finale and Dorico, and talk about MuseScore and others elsewhere?
OK, looks like I’ve got it sorted. Wow, Steinberg does do things “differently”.- for instance, when I chose a different location for the content, it just dumped all the files in there, didn’t create a “Halion” or “Steinberg” enclosing folder?
Pretty clear they are primarily(?) PC oriented. I’m used to things just working. I trust my confidence will be restored as I familiarize myself with the new paradigm.
I’ve gotten so used to Finale’s myriad quirks and annoyances, hoping I’ll find fewer in Dorico, and looking forward to getting to know the new community. Thanks for your calm guidance.
Not the case.
It’s a great forum and keep in touch!
The installation process is arcane.
To get going, there’s a good getting started guide that explains the concepts in Dorico and how to do the basic operations. Just trying things out could possibly leave you puzzled.
Press the download button to the right of the title of the first item in the list.

Today was the first day of classes at the university where I teach, so this news was absolutely terrible timing for me personally, LOL. I’m just now processing it completely and am a little overwhelmed at the work ahead of me in the next year to make sure everything is converted at least to XML and PDF. You can thankfully convert a folder (but not sub-folders … I think) to XML here:
I think most of the team uses Mac. I switched from PC to Mac earlier this year, and Dorico is a superior experience on Mac.
Yeah, the install process is painful.
Well I guess I’m having to reinstall Finale, to convert all my pre-2018 scores. Haven’t used Finale in a number of years, and have completely forgotten all key commands/tools, despite having used it from 1997 till 2017.
Someone asked in this thread if anyone actually liked using Finale. I did. Sure, it had a learning curve, and was a bit idiosyncratic at times, but it was very powerful, and I felt there were few limits on what I could do in it.
Sibelius making waves on Mac and Windows was the kick up the backside Finale seemed to need, and so the release of Finale 2000 was a pretty major improvement in numerous areas.
I felt by 2015 it was really beginning to show it’s age, hence why i began the move to Dorico more decisively. But I have fond memories of it. Some pretty memorable glitches at times too that said!
One thing I feel ought to by noted in Finale’s passing is the whole host of amazing third party plug in developers that increased functionality ten-fold. Tobias Geisen’s TGTools, Jari Williamson’s Forza, and Robert Patterson’s plugins were all fantastic.
I did when I started using it in the early 90’s, but it was about the only thing of consequence around. I’d not heard of Sibelius and the only other software I tried was Encore.
Especially given the “chaos” and shell-shock of the day’s news, I can certainly appreciate your plea for focus, @Mark_Johnson.
But I will say, knowing about the specific case of bad actors spreading misinformation about Dorico at just the moment when “marooned” Finale users are in full terror and considering their options for a new platform probably does have some important bearing on this or a similar thread.
Maybe when and if anyone with the authority to do so has the time, some of the multiple strands in this thread can be split out…? (Which I realize would place yet another burden on the Dorico team.)
I also wonder whether there would be some wisdom in pinning one or a small number of transition-support-themed threads so that all of us individual users aren’t flailing about with out scroll wheels, criss-crossing threads and duplicating…???
I may not have made proper sense out of the announcement, but it’s possible that reinstalling isn’t possible. Can anyone more knowledgable chime in?
I must have lucked out, I’m a mac user, and I’ve owned Dorico on two machines (previously a MacPro 2013 trash can and now MacStudio M2), but installation was fine for me.
I did find the Steinberg download assistant to be slightly quirky with the website login (I remember thinking the most ridiculous thing is you have to create a separate account name & password for Steinberg the store vs. Steinberg user account so I remember being annoyed thinking, “I literally just created an account!”).
Other than that it didn’t seem any more problematic than download/install assistants from other companies like VSL, Spitfire, XLN Audio, or Adobe’s Creative Cloud etc. Sorry to hear there have been issues out there but hopefully newcomers will quickly get it sorted and be encouraged to continue!
Reinstalling on an existing machine or a new machine is no problem for the next 12 months.
Thanks
The Dorico, Finale, and other communities are all great. As to the Dorico crew and this forum - nothing but positive dealings with all. You will like it, here.
